Potty training

Should I put the potty away

I attempted potty training using the 'oh crap' method but by the end of day 1 I decided that maybe ds wasn't as ready as I thought he was. He's 22mths and often points at his nappy to indicate that he's done/doing a per so I thought I'd give training a go. The problem is that he was holding on to his pee rather than doing it in the potty. He drinks a lot of water, and clearly needed to go but there was no way he was letting it out until he got a nappy on. At one point he was sitting on the potty with his hands in a bowl of warm water as I thought this would make him let go, but no, he was relaxed and playing with the water but no per. Anyway, I've decided to shelve it for a bit, but do you think I should put the potty away out of sight until the next time, or just leave it sitting about so he's very familiar with it. I'm concerned it will become a drinking well for his teddys and that he won't view it in the purpose it's intended for if I leave it out, but on the other hand, it could make the transition easier if it's always about and is less of a new thing. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Sorry, pressed post!

But if you do want to wait a while, I would definitely put the potty away for now so that it's not a toy. Just spend lots of time in the loo with him talking about it (pleasant!!) and make sure he can push his trousers down etc ready for when you start again.

Having done Oh Crap with a 22mo old, I would give it another day or two myself. Maybe don't sit him on the potty, even if you know he needs to go, because he needs to link the feeling of weeing with the potty so that he can link the feeling of needing to wee with the potty.

I peed - I'm peeing - I need to pee

DD used her potty as a ride on toy in between potty training attempts, which made me nervous for the flooring (fyi Karndean is very robust Grin ) but didn't stop her 'getting' potty training in a couple of days on the second attempt. She was a fair bit older than your DS though - 2.10 then 3.1 each time we tried.
