How to begin Potty training?

I bought a book and read the whole thing, and I am still lost on how exactly to begin. I dont have any more money to buy props like the wetting doll. I do have a mini toilet for him. I would have preferred the seat that goes directly on our family toilet but oh well for now. We have talked about it a lot and he gets the idea but I just feel like a flat out, simplified step by step direction would help me very much. He is 2.2 years old. Thanks in advance everyone. I appreciate your advice!

I talked about it a lot with DD before we tried anything, then left out the potty and small toilet seat so that they were familiar. One night before a bath I casually asked if she wanted to try the toilet, she did, and the next day I went for it. She was just 2.2.

The first few days she went around with nothing on her bottom half, as every time I put something on her she forgot it wasn't a nappy and had a wee. Then we ventured out with a travel potty, and despite a few accidents she was dry within about a fortnight.

About three months later she had a bit of a relapse, but it was over within a week and she's been dry and clean since.

Night time took longer - about another 6 months - but that has been much easier as it was just a case of one day she was dry and that was that.

I think at the beginning it seems a massively daunting task as you don't know how long it will take and you lose a lot of control not having nappies as they allow you to plan your day much more. But it gets better really quickly and soon you'll be through the other side.

Good luck!

Ha! Not too well actually. He is going in the potty from time to time. I leave him with a bare bottom in the mornings and the potty out. He will go in it sometimes, but not always. Then of course we have to diaper him up to get on with our walks or errands or anything outside of the house. I offer soda, juice to get him going and candy for rewards but does not seem to make quite a difference. I still feel like I dont have much structure or plan. I hear so many people say their children were potty trained in a day with accidents here or there. That would be such an accomplishment. Sigh.
