Parents of adult children

Thread 39 - Covid Cohort - Our Adult Children Now Post 18

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 30/08/2022 18:01

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

Thanks for the new thread: just logging on so I don’t lose you. Although in total denial about being the ‘parent of an adult child’…

Thanks for the new thread @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee !

3 out of 4 of mine are now adult children 😱😭

looking forward to hearing the freshers shenanigans as my DS2 works while waiting to go on his ocean-crossing adventure in Oct-Jan.

Thanks for the new thread!

Ds has been suffering with a cough & sore throat since he came back from Reading. Is grumpier than usual & shows no interest in shopping for uni!

I’ve bought the basics, he can buy anything else when he gets there.

Thanks for the new thread. Can’t believe DS is an adult though - he seems to be reverting to age 4 at the moment! I think it is leaving home nerves

@Decorhate - DD worked up to 15 hours a day on the bar at Reading and loved the experience. Her fav moment was when a young lad marched up and confidently ordered 2 Vodka Red Bulls. She asked for ID and he handed over his passport - he was born in 2006. RUMBLED!

Yes me too @Isthisjustnormal , except I don't know why as mine has been an adult for almost a year now (one of the older ones in the year). I just can't get my head around it!

I was a fairly young mum and it's hard to believe DS is almost at the age I/his Dad was when he was born

Thanks for the new thread cinnamon

Thanks @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee

Both my DC are adults now, seems very odd with little one preparing to go away.

It's a great collection of courses and unis isn't it - even though the world is obviously a complete shitshow right now, the amazing DC on this thread do give me some hope for the future.

My big child is almost 19. Really scary. Looking forward to those italics turning to standard text on the next thread Singing, fingers crossed!

I think I am going to get dreadful Empty Nest syndrome. He's my best buddy.
Thanks OP for new thread.
Laptop bought today - DS parted with some of his savings to buy it . hopefully, it's reliable!

Thanks for the thread! What an incredibly varied list!

My DD's latest pre-uni purchases have been an entirely plan fabric backpack so she can embroider/decorate it, and a teeny tiny folding camp-stool which fits in said backpack so that she can sit and sketch anywhere. Plus she stumbled on a half-price clearance sale of art supplies at The Works and now has lots of sketchbooks. Somehow I don't think I'll add those to the "what should I take to uni" threads as they're a bit niche! 😀
