My DS got a lot of joy out of the ELC postbox at that age. That one seems to have been discontinued, but you can probably get similar ones elsewhere. 'Posting' objects that make a satisfying clunk.

Mine really liked (and still like now at age 2 and 5!) WOW toys. They are really robust, the little people are made in one piece so they’re not a choking hazard and the vehicles have push and go motors (no batteries). They’re really fab. My littlest spends ages putting the animals in the farm truck and pushing them along.

The best things mine had at that age were Happyland and Peek a blocks, they played with them in one way or another from about 9 months old until 4 or 5 years old. Dd had a Ballapalooza for her first birthday too and loved it but only for 6 months or so.

Fisher Price Little People were a massive hit with my DD. She has the farm, safari, school house, and a Disney castle. Shes now 4 and still wont part with them. I dont think they still have the same selection there used to be but argos & Smyths used to a good selection.

There is a wonderful online toy company called Jaques of London who sell a variety of age appropriate toys, all wooden. Lovely quality and beautifully packaged when it arrives. Also very reasonably priced. I've bought lots from there and would highly recommend it for gift ideas.
