I got her a push along dog (walker thing) and my husband made some wooden stacking blocks. We mainly got toys, books and clothes from family.

Too much plastic when I think about it. (Hangs head in shame) and well just too much stuff. Plus the party, the cake, the smash cake, the balloons and the decor. If we have another one, the whole thing will be much simpler. Looking back on it, it was clearly all about me rather than him.

We ended getting him a walker/push toy to help encourage walking. A football, megablocks, wooden blocks, vtech toot toot cars and garage, books, bath toys, new foam play mat, ball pit and a million balls, first puzzles and a shape sorter, some sort of wooden thingy that you could hammer pegs into. Plus whatever the family got him.

On reflection of this (silly) list we should have just got him the football and the wooden blocks. He's nearly 6 and still plays with both of those. And they were the gags on the day.

Nowt. He didn't know or care and we were skint. Oh actually I think we maybe got him some clothes, can't really remember. He definitely liked the wrapping paper more than whatever was inside, I can remember that.

My parents took us out for a meal to a pub with a nice play area to celebrate us keeping him alive for 12 months. He enjoyed the free balloons and his first taste of cake. All good. Pretty sure he's not scarred by not having a massive amount of cash wasted on him.

A rocking rider toy - a Mamas and Papas one that switches between a rocking horse and a sit on toy that moves. I was amazed trying them in the shop, she’d never seen one before but knew exactly what to do on it!

Stacking cups, shape sorter, flap books, latches board. Little thing with a hammer that you knock shapes through a little table type thing. I'd try not to go mad as they won't play with most things, but it's nice to have a few things that they will grow into before their next birthday or Christmas.

I put £100 in her bank account. Books, vtec walker, can't quite remember the rest. She had them all before her birthday.

An alphabet book and a Mr Man book. One was £2.99 and one £3.99. We had stretched to a large house, I was about to give up work because ds was poorly and an hadn't been paid by a cpl of major clients.

One book was for his birthday and one for Christmas. He was born on Xmas Day. It turned but there was a delish week that January when I had £17 to feed us. Potato bake with cabbage anyone?

Didn't buy any of my kids anything for their first birthdays. They didn't know what was going on and they got gifts from family.
For their second birthdays I didn't go over the top either. I'm not big on presents though, would rather do something instead.

We got one of those slides that is attached to a cube playframe. I think some other family members chipped in towards it. Child enjoyed the box it came in at first...but also the slide stayed in the garden for years before going off to someone else.

For Christmas at 1 our lad got a smart trike, he loved that. He can pedal himself in it too now so it's still in use.

Other things he was into at 1 were a tea set and a play kitchen and a till. Again, these are things they can grow into.

A thing that stuck on the bath and blew bubbles at her. 10 years later we still have it and use when friends’ little ones stay over. Made good 1st birthday photos too, which is the only reason I remember !

We got her one of those wooden boxes with activities on the sides and the top. Like the ones that used to be at the doctors always.

Early Learning Centre Happyland Zoo, which I’d bought when it was about half price. We went for a day out at the zoo too and she got a panda soft toy. She’s played with the happyland a fair bit and it has been a good thing to add to over time, with items from a few pounds as stocking fillers to bigger, more expensive sets. She is five now and still gets it out regularly

Dc1: bike (4 wheels type), brio, duplo from grandparents. Dc2: pop up tunnels to chase dc1 through in garden. For a kid who likes pulling things apart , a latch board is a good toy.
