Reusable nappy chat

Hi

Anyone already using reuseables? I'm looking to start using them from as early as possible after baby is here (due Sept) but I'm struggling as so much out there on the market.

I've ordered a totsbots trial pack, 1 bambino miosolo, 1 littles&bloomz plus 2 bamboo inserts.

Will these be good to go and fit from newborn?
I appreciate this is not enough for full time use, just want to try and see how we get on before investing heavily and sadly no nappy library near me to help with that.

Any tips and recommendations welcome, please!!!

Hi! I used to be on the reusable nappy chat, a million years ago and think there's a topic about cloth nappies here?

In terms of sizing, there are roughly 3 sizes - newborn, stage 1 - 3.

Personally I preferred the cloth nappy and an outer layer than the all in ones, but it's a matter of preference. I mostly used Tots Bots, and especially loved their Bamboozle.

I also liked wool as a wrap but realise that makes me a weirdo

best of luck. I did manage it for all 3 children and can count the number of disposables I used.

But even if you use disposables at night, that's still a major contribution to landfill.

We started using cloth from 10 weeks. The nappy lady website (and Facebook page) has lots of information on washing routine and general care etc. The totsbots we have are totsbots bamboozle and they would have been too big for my boy as he was 7lb at birth and the size we got was from 9lb so it’s worth double checking the sizing of the ones you have. If they are too big you can always delay using them if you don’t want to invest in smaller ones.

If you haven’t already got any I would recommend reusable wipes too. We got the full cheeky wipes set but you don’t need the tubs etc just a load of cloths in a plastic Tupperware box and a sandwich bag for carrying them out and about. Chuck them in with nappies for a wash.

Everyone will recommend what they use and our experience with tots bots has been very positive but if you want impartial advice the nappy lady advice questionnaire is worth completing. She is not loyal to a specific brand and takes into consideration things like your drying facilities. We use pocket nappies day time and totsbots 2 parters at night with boosters as the totsbots we have are quite chunky but more absorbent.

Thanks both. I couldn't find a nappy chat on here?! I've done the questionnaire on the nappy lady about 5/6 weeks ago and still haven't had a reply. I've done the nappy guru one recently too but still not had response to that yet either. Maybe it's a corona delay thing atm!

Good to know you had a good experience with totsbots! I'm excited to try reusable they look so cute.

Check your spam/junk email, my email account sent nappy lady emails there for some reason.

I used disposables for the first few weeks as I wanted to just get used to the new reality of having a baby before going for cloth nappies as well, so didn't buy the tiny size, we went for pocket nappies that should last until potty training (hopefully!). Personally prefer ones with poppers to ones with velcro.

Definitely get reusable wipes, they're great and much more effective!

Second all the advice on reusable wipes.

I tried all sorts, as I did 4 children in them so had time to try different things.

Little lambs do lovely shaped inners- just like a disposable but made of bamboo or cotton. I use nappynippas instead of Velcro as Velcro snagged on every thing, can be a bit scratchy, and nappynippas gave me a better fit.

I ended up liking stuffables best. I found some really inexpensive two layer shaped inners with an opening across the top so you could add the amount of absorbency that suited- a booster, two boosters, a flannel etc.

Separate outers mean you can reuse them without washing, which is a godsend. It makes it cheaper overall as you only need perhaps four outers.

The all in ones are easy, but potentially slow to dry and you need quite a lot.

I use these. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HCF6QAY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?psc=1&ie=UTF8&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

They have 3 sizes they adjust and fit newborn. You need more inserts than you expect. Midwives expect you to get 6+ changes a day! We find reusables easier than disposables, and reassuring because otherwise there would be so much waste, and we'd be in and out going to the outside bin! What I have heard is that once you start with one it's easier to stick than to switch.

We've been gifted some disposables already so will use them to supplement newborn days. I successfully got in touch with a nappy library that are happy to loan me a newborn kit too, they're the nearest library but still quite far! Gutted that I live in a city without one! But hoorah none the less.

Are the all-in-2 nappy types more reliable than all-in-ones? They sound like they'll dry quicker which is appealing, but are they more or less of a faff?!

Are cheeky wipes the best ones to go for? How many would you say would be needed?

There is just so many options!! Who knew cloth nappies were such a minefield!

Thanks ladies

Bambino Miosolos will probably be too big from birth. We have used them with both children but they only started fitting properly without leaks at around the 3 month mark.

I have been very impressed with totsbots bamboozles and peenut wraps. I find the 2 part nappies much easier to get a tight fit and less likely to leak. I thought they would be more of a faff and they do take slightly longer to change but I think it's worth it for a more reliable nappy.

We hired a kit from a nappy library to figure out which ones we liked and fitted our baby the best, so it's great time been able to source one.

We initially found the amount of info and different types overwhelming but trial and error was really helpful. We ended up going with Tots Bots and love them. We use all three types; bamboozle for night and the peenut system & easy fit stars during the day. The peenut pads dry the fastest but the others still dry in a day.

We started using them when our baby was big enough for the size twos which should take him up to potty training. I think Tots Bots do a smaller size for newborns.

Good luck, we really love using them and they look really cute!
