When did you let your baby sleep alone?

I don't mean in their own room all night, I just mean in the evening time after 7pm until we go to bed at about 10/11pm.
My 7week daughter sleeps between this time and wakes up for a feed and then goes back to sleep.
However when she's sleeping downstairs with us she does get disrupted with us talking or if the tv has a loud part.
So I'm wondering is it safe yet to let her sleep in her Moses basket upstairs on her own (with monitors obviously)

Also, what age did you put your baby in there own room?

I put dd upstairs for that period from about 6 weeks and in her own room from about 4 months. She has always been big and strong for her age and I had no worries about her health (monitors and checked regularly)

Helbelle75 · 18/09/2017 04:41

Our dd is 5 months old and we follow the lullaby trust guidelines for safer sleep, so she never sleeps in a separate room to us. Her bed time is currently 8pm and I go up to bed with her and stay with her.
It's only for a short period of time and makes sure she's safe.

Once my DS was disturbed in the evening by us, we put him to bed upstairs and started a bedtime routine. I think it was around 8-10 weeks.

We moved him into his own room at just over 4 months. He outgrew his Moses basket, we didn't have room for a cot in our room, and we all slept so much better - he woke up every time we turned over if he was in a light sleep and when he was sleeping deeply he kept me awake with his grunting and snuffling!

Changerofname987654321 · 18/09/2017 07:21

It is not considered safe until 6 months.

I did put her up stairs at 4 months but when I look back on it is terrifies me to think I took such a risk with her.

BertieBotts · 18/09/2017 07:25

At about 8 months Blush

I think the poster above me is being a bit dramatic though. It's certainly not 'such a risk' at four months. By 4 months the SIDS risk has significantly dropped anyway - the peak is 2 months IIRC. But even at its highest the risk is very small. Doubling the risk sounds bad, but doubling from 0.01% to 0.02% doesn't sound so serious. If you feel ready and the sleep environment is safe then I think an hour or two at a time should be fine.

BertieBotts · 18/09/2017 07:29

Remember each guideline is best practice. It doesn't mean if you miss one thing out something terrible is going to happen. Each suggested guideline all reduce the risk in their own way, but it's okay for you as parents to review the evidence available and decide which guidelines you're going to stick to and which not.

SIDS rates are hugely reduced with modern guidance but even before we had these most babies survived. So try and keep it in perspective.

GinIsIn · 18/09/2017 07:32

We followed the safe sleeping guidelines - he didn't sleep alone until 6 months.

Smarshian · 18/09/2017 07:33

The biggest risk factors for sids are smoking and cosleeping under the influence of drink/drugs. There are other factors but these are highest risk. You know your baby and what you feel is right for you.

PotteringAlong · 18/09/2017 07:34

When they were reliably sleeping all evening, so about 5 months with each baby.

Celticlassie · 18/09/2017 07:47

Since she was about 5 months we've put her in her cot in our room to sleep from 8. It's right beside the room we're in and she has a monitor but it means she isn't disturbed.
I quite enjoy the chance to sit and watch TV etc in the evening.

Prusik · 18/09/2017 07:51

We started putting Ds upstairs to bed at around 4 months but one of us would stay with him until about 5.5 months

Purpleball · 18/09/2017 07:51

From about 4 weeks, in his crib with angelcare movement monitor on. He was disturbed by any noises we made downstairs

Cuppaqueen · 18/09/2017 10:07

We started putting DS down for naps in his cot in our bedroom (next door to the living room) from 4 months old. He just couldn't handle the light and noise of being in the same room as us any more. We did so with some trepidation due to SIDS guidelines but he was past peak danger time and a big healthy boy who never had any breathing issues at all. We check on him regularly and as he's just next door we hear any cries immediately. DH and I are both happy with this. No plans to move him to his own room at night though until at least 6 months and I suspect will be longer.

You have to do what you feel comfortable with as parents. It's your responsibility.

I started putting her to bed in our room at 8pm at about 12 weeks but I probably would have done it earlier if I'd realised the reason she was such a grump from 8-10pm was because she was tired (I blame sleep deprivation) I'd have preferred her to sleep in the lounge with us until we went to bed but the light and noise is too disturbing for her and since 16 weeks she sleeps from 8pm to 3-4am as she isn't disturb by being moved.I check on her a lot though.
I'll be moving her to her own room around 6 months.

NerrSnerr · 18/09/2017 12:37

Six months for us. I know the risks are small but SIDS is a huge cause of worry for me and I didn't want the worst to happen and it be my fault for not following guidelines. Movement/ breathing sensors would be useless with SIDS as by the time they've stopped breathing it's too late.

SnowWhite33 · 18/09/2017 14:12

From around 8 weeks, we realised the noise in the living room was begining to distract him. DS would sleep in his moses basket by our bed. We started to put him there from 7pm after the cluster feed and within a week he got into a routine. I would feed him again at 11pm before going to bed and then again at 4am and getting up at 7am.
From 4months we moved him to his cot bed in his own room, and moved there ourselves, he maintained the same routine till 6 months then suddenly dropped the night feed. We then moved back to our bedroom. Worked very well.

DeliciouslyHella · 18/09/2017 15:35

Around 8 or 9 weeks with each DC. We were led by them and when they started to be restless and grumpy in the evenings, we started a proper bedtime routine.

confused123456 · 18/09/2017 15:51

I hate Moses baskets and would never ever have one. My little one only ever slept upstairs in his crib day and night from the day he came home. We had a video monitor, and when he was very young I checked on him regularly. But it was fine. I don't see the problem with it at all. (Not sure why your baby sleeping upstairs would terrify you?)
He didn't go in his own room until he was 16 months as I didn't want him to. We wanted to put him in a toddler bed. So we had to put his cot in his own room first to get him used to it. Then he went in his toddler bed at 17 months. Again with the monitor.

welshweasel · 18/09/2017 15:55

10 weeks here (from 7pm until we went to bed). Moved into his own room at 7 months.

demirose87 · 18/09/2017 16:02

Think it also depends on the layout of house. When I lived in a small flat I did it from about 6 weeks as my living room was right next to the bedroom so I could hear everything and pop in and out constantly, but now I'm in a house with upstairs and downstairs I'll be going up when my new baby goes up and if we stay down a bit longer, he will be in the living room with us.

CosyPinkBlanket · 18/09/2017 19:43

My 13-month old is a real night owl and we try to put her to bed around 9.30pm and by the time I've fed her to sleep, it's my bed time!!! She still sleeps in her Next To Me in our room! We are looking to move her into her own room soon though!

rixed · 18/09/2017 22:00

In the chicco cosy? She still fits?!

From the beginning in a room by themselves. No monitor either. Not worried about SIDS because it is very rare. Life is too short too worry so much. And funnily enough millions upon millions of babies have been fine for these monitors and whatnot..

drinkyourmilk · 18/09/2017 22:40

We moved dd into her crib in our room in the evenings from around 7/8 weeks. She just cried in the living room as she wanted to sleep.
She's almost 6 months now- and as she still wakes regularly at night she'll be in with us for a while yet. She mostly co-sleeps anyhow

CosyPinkBlanket · 18/09/2017 22:52

Yes Rixed! She's got about 3 inches left...! Grin
