First there was The Fast Diet, then the 8-week Blood Sugar Diet and now Michael Mosley brings us The Clever Guts Diet. Tomorrow (Wednesday 24 May) at 1pm we’ll be on air for a Facebook live with Dr Mosley as he talks us through this new diet that aims to ‘revolutionise the body from inside out’.

Anyone who has ever suffered from gut-related syndromes (IBS, bloating, leaky gut) should read this groundbreaking book which shows how modern day diet has wiped out many good gut bacteria, leading to a plague of allergies, food intolerances and obesity. The clever guts diet sets out to change this by showing you what you can do to restore and maintain a healthy gut biome.

During theFacebook livewe'll be asking Michael talk us through some food standard food products and how they can affect the microbiome of your gut. We’ll also be putting your questions to Dr Mosley so do login. Everyone who likes Mumsnet Facebook page and comments will be entered into a draw to win a SIGNED copy of the book.

If you're unable to join live, post your comments and questions on this thread and we'll do our best to put them to MM during the interview.

Hello Dr Mosley,

I have multiple food intolerances and chronic fatigue. The most severe reactions are to dairy, egg whites, yeast extract and peanuts. Nuts, pulses, several veg and several grains/cereals are tolerable only once or twice a week. This is obviously quite restrictive. Probiotics, even dairy free and without FOS and the common IBS triggers - brassica and onions - make me very bloated. Do you have any advice please?

i have very bad IBS the result of severe food poisoning which caused bowel damage.
Currently taking amitriptyline 10mg which is working wonders for the pain and swelling.

I avoid milk and keep to a low fibre diet as much as possible.
have also tried symprove which did help.

have been on fodmapp a few times and have been told to live as much as possible on that diet. Which is tricky!
Any thing thats worth trying I will do. esp as I have been warned that other foods in the future will be an issue.

Hi Michael, love your work!

I watched your sleep programme the other day, and I wondered which prebiotic powder you used.

I tried pure inulin (2g only), and was incapacitated with - ahem - appalling bowel pain the next morning.

I've since read extremely mixed reports on inulin, and am feeling figuratively and literally bruised by the experience.

Any advice?

I'm hoping to join the chat, I've ordered the book and really looking forward to reading it. My question is - do you still follow the 5:2 diet? I'm thinking about starting it andvwould live to know if you still see it as having the health (as well as weight loss) benefits you originally discovered. Thank you!

Dr. Mosley, I have had a recent Helicobacter Pylori diagnosis.
What tips do you have to A) get gut bacteria back in shape after such strong antibiotic treatment and B) what diet can I follow (vegetarian) to keep it at bay?
Thank you in advance.

I am in my third week of the blood sugar diet, after doing the 5:2 for a few months. It has made me feel so much better. I came out high as a carb addict and have PTSD, so recognised the symptoms of insulin resistance. My husband noticed the difference in me and has started the blood sugar diet too. In fact we'd just been talking about how much better we feel. Thank you so much for your research and books. I feel that you are trustable. I don't trust easily!

What would you recommend to Someone who has to survive on carbs? I have crohns, a 6st 2 GIST under my stoma. All my bowel is outside my stomach wall. Have numerous fistualas and active crohns, new tract between my anal canal and vagina (sorry)
Live on a diet of carbs, steroids and huge amounts of loperamide (100 a day) and codeine....
I am rancid. Have given up all hope of surgery due to not being viable but need to live... I am not even 40.

What is your view on avoiding FODMAPs for IBS?

I just wanted to come on here and say thank you for changing my life! Last October I was a undiagnosed diabetic, obese and well on my way to metabolic syndrome. I had suffered awful GD during my last two pregnancies.
My GP gave me a right telling off after a series of blood tests and I was sent away with 8 weeks to turn myself around or I was being referred to endocrinology. My morning fasting glucose levels were often in the 9 range and I felt dreadful (still had the monitor from my pregnancies).
I bought your book, the 8 week blood sugar diet, stuck to it and returned to my GP 8 weeks later having lost over 18% of my body weight (20kg), fasting blood sugars in the 4.5 range, a totally normal HbA1c. I feel amazing!! My GP was shocked at the transformation and absolutely delighted. What's more, the weight has stayed off - even over Christmas!
Thank you... Thank you..... Thank you....

Hi Michael

For years now I am and have been a terrible sleeper, getting to sleep and staying a sleep (I resort to antihistamines) and have infrequent bowel movements.

I started taking magnesium and prebiotic inulin 3G (now sold out!) having watched your programme The Truth about Sleep.

How long does it take before it helps with my sleep, not sure if related but after a couple of days I had a huge breakout of spots on my chin, I'm mid 40's on birth control so unlikely hormonal? Is that related? Should I stick with the magnesium and inulin?

Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated, thanks so much.

Hi, great book, just got my first ever batch of sauerkraut on the go! I'm a doctor too (pathologist) and am very jealous of your talent at conveying complex medical ideas in such a clear and entertaining way.

My question is, for someone with no medical problems, if you could only use one strategy from your book to increase gut flora diversity, which one would you use? Thanks!

I started your diet last week. For the first time in years I was able to eat all manner of fruits and vegetables I haven't eaten for years, since following the Fodmap diet.I had dairy yoghurt, kefir, kimchi, cider vinegar, oats and lots of advocado on toast and in the chocolate mousse. My tummy was very settled and no diarrhoea at all.I've now been told to avoid dairy due to the vertigo I've had for the last month. So I've tried to substitute the Kefir with home made coconut yoghurt and a probiotic pill. They really haven't worked as well as I'm again getting an upset tummy. But I am eating a massive amount of lentils, salads and roasted vegetables , brown rice and apples and a much higher fibre intake.Whats the best option here.Do I Need to make my own home made Kefir? Also how do you make thick coconut yoghurt ?
Secondly I believe my restricted Fodmap diet has contributed to my weight gain and possibly reduced the range of bacteria in my stomach. Is there any proof of this?

Hi Michael,

I have Crohn's which has gradually got worse over the past three and a half years. I've been gluten-free for three years. Despite this, the Crohn's continues to get more problematic.

I recently ate a packet of crispbread over four days believing them to be gluten free. Afterwards I discovered they were made of rye and were not gluten free at all. Over those four days my Crohn's symptoms did not get suddenly worse.

So am I wasting my time being gluten free?

Thanks! Molly :-)

Hi wannabestressfree, no one recommended I went gluten free, it was my choice three and a bit years ago when Crohn's became overwhelming and I was clutching at anything. It seemed to make a difference so I kept it up. But it didn't take me into full remission (or anything like it) and so now I'm not so sure if it's helping at all. We've met before on MN. Hope you feel better soon x
