Is surgery an option for early MMC in england?

I posted yesterday as I’ve got a suspected MMC (to be confirmed in another scan next week but I’m sure of my dates). If it doesn’t happen naturally soon I think I’d like to have the operation but not sure what the procedure is in English hospitals.

I’ll be 10 weeks (or so I thought) next week but the baby was measured 6 weeks. I’d be interested to hear from others what the options they were presented in England were? I have a feeling they will offer medical induction first but i really don’t want to go through an extremely painful induced labour. I wondered if Covid may be impacting procedure too if they’re doing less operations?

I am so sorry you are going through this. I had MMC a year ago and had a surgery. Please ask anything you want...

@Bets2801 hope you’re doing ok. My miscarriage started a week ago and the first couple of days were pretty painful, but that side of it’s not so bad now. Get lots of rest, eat whatever you fancy! I was pretty disappointed not to be able to have the surgical procedure that was booked for me, but there’s some strange relief that our bodies can eventually recognise things going wrong and sort themselves out naturally.

Thank you for the replies and I’m sorry you’ve both had to go through this as well! About 2 hours after I posted I started bleeding so hopefully this is things starting now and fingers crossed it will be quick and complete! It sounds strange but I was so relieved to see blood..the not knowing when / what was going to happen is torture and I think I had that tiny bit of hope that they’d got it wrong but this saves me holding onto that for another week till they would have re-scanned.

Hi I recently had a MMC, similar dates to you. Due to covid they couldn't offer me a ERPC under general anaesthetic but they did offer me an MVA under local anaesthetic. As the baby hasn't come out on it's own they probably will suggest that. Hope your okay it's a hard time x

Hi, this exact thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I found out on the Friday that it was a confirmed mmc, got referred to the hospital on the Monday and they gave me a leaflet with my options and told me the pros and cons of each, I chose surgical (no pressure at all to go for any procedure) and they asked me if I had a preference for when it would be done. I said ASAP please and they told me to come back at 7am the next day. I was taken to theatre at 11am and home at 6pm.
