Year 2 maths, help!

My ds is in Year 2 and really struggling with maths. School offer no live lessons and we have just oak academy. It’s ok but I really want to help him build his confidence.

In school they use Singapore maths no problem books. Tbh I bought a set last year but found the layout very confusing and ds was bored by it.

Are there any good Maths resources you would recommend? I’m at my wits end, it’s so hard to get him to do any maths but when he does grasp the concept he really comes on.

The school absolutely should be providing teaching remotely. Either live or pre recorded lessons. Why are they not? They obliged to, it's in the DFE guidance.

An Oak academy lesson is a pre recorded lesson. It's input,with examples,explanations, time to figure things out etc.

I echo the many recommending White Rose Maths. DS did that in lockdown last year and I prefer that to the school love lessons. In fact they are using WR worksheets.

I don't know if it is an option but best thing I did is organise a local primary school teacher (on a career break) to give my y2 daughter maths and English tuition. She responds so much better to actual teaching. It is a stretch to afford it but she has grown in confidence.

It really depends what exactly he's struggling with.

Is he secure in the basics? Place value, number bonds, various techniques to add /divide/multiply/take away etc?

If yes, any of the websites recommended will be good.

If not, you need to go back to basics and I'd recommend buying some visual /concrete resources like numicon and dienes and do lots of practice with those until he is secure. They can also help as a visual aid for whatever he is doing at school.
