The best way to get finances under control is to see what impact decisions will have.
But lots of people do not enjoy writing spreadsheets.
I do.

Credit Cards
If you pay the minimum on a credit card, it will take up to 18 years to pay off.
With a couple of really simple steps, you can clear those debts in a fraction of the time.
Input your numbers here
docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiZqlQ7-gn07dHRoTXA5Qnlld25UWkw1TEhZZk9IYVE&authkey=CMjc4JEB&authkey=CMjc4JEB#gid=0

Mortgages
Lots of people have mortgages where they are only paying the interest, without fully understanding that this means they are only really renting their home, rather than paying off the loan.
Have a look at the implications here
docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiZqlQ7-gn07dDN4clg5OXhLMGJWbHZhOEo4UTJINEE#gid=0

Budgeting your income and expenditure
Its easy to firefight rather than plan when life gets tight.
This spreadsheet puts spending by order of necessity so makes it easier to see where you are
docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiZqlQ7-gn07dFRwOFJENmVzX1RHR05UMGtIYkltcWc&usp=drive_web#gid=0

All of the spreadsheets are a general resource - feel free to download them to your own computer and make use of them.

Please do not damage the master copies - but I do check them every week or so.

If there are any spreadsheets that you would like me to write, ask and I'll see what I can do.

As a slight aside, here is the link to my Ebay Me page all about the tax side of running a small business

PS
I find it very sad that people are unable to download and play with the spreadsheets on their own machines, rather than trashing the public one.

Right,
Whichever bastard hacked my email account and changed the password and locked down my spreadsheets can eff off into a parallel universe with bells on.

They are back live.
I have asked Google to investigate.

And am currently repairing the utter destruction of the budget sheet.

There are some unbelievably selfish MNers it appears.

The two main ones should be working now.

If anybody knows Eleanor Beattie, please tell her to get her greasy paws off my spreadsheets.
As that is the user name who trashed the access.

Hi, Everyone i hope i can join in.

I am at my wits end with a CC that i can't seem to pay of because i am skint and crap with numbers (Not money).

Can anyone suggest the best way to pay of this debt quickly? Should i borrow from the Credit Union and pay the whole thing of now? Or should i try and get my head around bigger payments and let it roll on for years and years.

Thanks

I need help things have got on top of me. I have 3 credit cards 2 of which were 0% for 24 months. I have missed the payoff deadline and now am on a ridiculous 18.9% APR. I do often put the extra ££ I have into paying off the cards and I never use them.

I am so lost as to how to pay them off quickly. I could get a loan from my bank at 7.3% APR for 3 years.

I tried snowballing I just messed up and really want to be debt free asap.

Can anyone advise?

Hi there Lazysusan
Set up standing orders for each of them right now. Sunday afternoon.
Do not take out another loan.

Have a look at the spreadsheet in the opening post, work out how much you paid on your direct debit last month on each card, round it up to the nearest tenner and set that up as a standing order.

Now ignore them and they will be gone within 2 years at no further cost or pain to yourself.

And cut them up so that you cannot use them again.

Come and join the big debt thread for a friendly place to discuss getting spending habits back under control.

Dear Sally Houltby.
DO NOT restrict access to my Budget sheet. Or vandalise it in the way you have.

The other sheets look OK

Just come across this amazing thread and downloaded the budgetting spreadsheet - but it's got someone else's data on it, it seems.

TP can I just erase the data on it and input my own? I'm not terribly literate with this kind of thing.
And a big thank you TP. Smile

aka I think if you go to the sheet 1 tab instead of the household budget tab that sheet is blank. I downloaded to excel though. Looks like the formulas might be a tiny bit off.

I am aware that I need to lock the percentage buttons on both the mortgage and card sheets : make sure that the rate is showing as a percentage to get sensible figures

Ta1kinPeace · 02/10/2015 13:11

NB : Credit card sheet is playing silly beggars with its percentages.

Interest rate : for 8% you need to key in 0.08 .... for 17% you need to key in 0.17

Minimum percentage will almost always be between 3% (0.03) and 10% (0.10)
Minimum amount is usually between £5 and £10

I'll have a proper session of updating it to the latest google algorithm this weekend

Cheers

PS
a couple of people have recently accidentally broken the sheets
BUT
have been polite and helpful enough to let me know by PM so that I can do swift repairs before anybody else notices

PLEASE
feel free to use the sheet and if you do make a mess up, let me know and I'll gladly sort it

and I'll get the hang of the new Google Docs algorithm soon Grin

These have inspired me to check all our 'stuff' but I started with the mortgage spreadsheet and am not sure I've done it right / understand the point right!

If we make additional repayments on top of the interest only mortgage payments that will mean that the balance reduces - therefore, so does the interest but your repayment columns just show the interest fixed?
