Sperm results help pls - low morphology

Hi all,

New member here and I Need some help from anyone here who’s got some insight on sperm results.

So basically my dh has a sperm analysis last week which basically came back at 0.5 million count so beyond low!! Motility at like 30%. I was absolutely devastated beyond words to hear your only way to conceive is via ivf icsi.

We repeated the test again as my husband didn’t abstain for long enough (only 2 days first time) and the results came back at below.

Sperm count - 76ml
Total sperm number - 228
Motile concentration - 46
Motility - 60%
Profession - 2-3
Morphology normal forms - 1

Is this a normal analysis now? We know the sperm count and motility is good but the morphology is only at 1%. I am getting conflicting information is the clinic can’t say if it’s 100% a normal result or analysis for an Average man.

My question is based on the count and motility have we got a good chance with only 1% morphology to conceive naturally ?

Any answers would be appreciated x

That's great that you have started some natural approaches.
Have you looked into water and fat-soluble CoQ10 for better absorption compared to regular CoQ10? CoQ10 is one of the ingredients in the Proxeed. One thing that is tricky is that it is unknown what the levels of the ingredients are in the Proxeed supplement, so you may want to review your supplements with your doctor.

Hi @Rubberduckies thanks for taking time out to reply

We only got the results a few weeks ago. I've got him on multivitamins and proxeed. My husband is super healthy already doesn't smoke or really drink as he's an athlete so there isn't much physical changes for him to do. I'm just hoping the multivitamins and proxeed plus can help. Will check again on it in a few months

Hi @Trinpy that's great news! definitely gives me a lot more hope.

1% morphology is low. 4% is the WHO guidelines. Has he done all the usual self care stuff - e.g. loose pants, limit baths, refuce caffei e and alcohol, taking vitamin c, coq10 etc?

Is it 3months since his last test and starting taking the supplements?

How long have you been trying? I'm surprised that they straightaway said the only chance is icsi. Our results were worse but they still said it was possible but that we can go for icsi I'm after the 2years trying (since found out privately that antisperm antibodies were 70% so obviously that changes things)

Just to add - my DH had 0% morphology on samples and we conceived naturally 3 times. Our consultant wasn't at all concerned about the low morphology, he did prescribe Clomid for my ovulatory problems but he said, with otherwise good results, it was likely I would conceive naturally eventually (and he was right!).

Good luck Smile

Hi @Pumpkin18 our first result which was bad and inaccurate was 0.5 which was half a million so yours sounds like 290,000. It's not great but there's still more than enough for ivf icsi. When I got the first result i literally grilled the doctors to make sure we understood everything

Pumpkin18 · 18/08/2018 08:36

Yeah he's had 2 tests. His recent one was a bit higher but still no morphology result. His count says 0.29. I don't know if that literally means 0.29 million or 29 million. It's really frustrating that the Dr couldn't explain any of it

Kay2705 · 18/08/2018 08:28

Hi @Pumpkin18 this was the same when we had our first test. His count was so low they couldn't get morphology reading. They said we could still do ivf but with icsi as they pick the sperm out so as long as he has some you should be fine. What was his count?

Have you done another test to confirm it's accurate?

They couldn't even get a morphology reading for my husband's sperm due to low numbers. I am concerned this will mean we wouldn't even be able to have ivf, does anyone know?

Thank you @Raindancer411 my hubby is taking proxeed as I heard a lot about it. I'm not sure if he can take it and Wellman. He currently takes a lot of multivitamins so don't want to overload his system 😭😩

Never one to want to give false hope BUT after 4 years ttc, 3 tears with beyond low motility, morphology and count (so long ago that I can’t remember the actual numbers - but they were even unsure about icsi without a donor sperm) I have a gorgeous little baby with no intervention at all.
your numbers look better than ours did so however you choose to move forward don’t lose hope. Keeping everything crossed for a gorgeous baby for you.

I have my fingers firmly crossed for you. Not sure if he does, but the other half took wellman vits and we had fresher made dinners. You may already do this, but it cannot hurt to mention it x

Hi, my hubby had this before I meet him and they said the same that he would need ivf for any kids. Surprisingly after this, 9 months after meeting him I was pregnant naturally. There is hope... I think his was the same as your hubbies but he chucked the paperwork after I fell pregnant as he said it was obviously not needed anymore

Hi angels,

Thank you! I'm keeping hope for the rest of his stats. Hope you get your bfp soon too

Hi Jojo,

Yes the jump between both is incredible. We are going to take a third test maybe in a few weeks to get a confirmed results. I'm hoping they either tested wrong or it was because my husband didn't abstain long enough

JoJoSM2 · 16/08/2018 22:12

It makes no sense to go from 0.5mil to 228. They must have tested sth wrong so I'd insist on repeating the test again.

To answer the morphology question- under 4% is still an indication for ivf. Average is 15%.

60% motility is unbelievably good.
Even of you had low sperm count, the fact that they are strong swimmers offsets it.

My DP has 10.4 million and 1% motility. Explains why I'm not getting preggo this last 15 months!

We are taking insane levels of supplements known to increase sperm count and quality and we are retesting in 6 weeks time. Hopefully there will have been a good improvement or better yet, a BFP!!

MyIVFHart · 15/08/2018 16:09

He had 98% then less than 50% then back to 89% on the last two tests.

Hope the next lot of results go well for you

Thanks for the response.

We are deffo going to try going for a 3rd one to get an overall value. What was your antibodies count? Ours was 2% and 0%

We had differing resukts but ours was regarding antibodies.

The clinic did 4 tests in the end after sending us away to conceive naturally.

Would a re test be beneficial to get an idea on average for you both personally? I am so glad we did as no amount of trying naturally would have worked and we Really did need ICSI.
