What to expect with gyne appointment?

I posted this in the conception board but another poster made me think about positing it here instead since we've been TTC for 15 months now.
I have my first gyne appointment next week after DH & I have been TTC for now 15 months. I'm a little scared to be honest. Has anyone else gone this far with testing? What can I expect from my first appointment? Is there anything I need to know in advance?

@physicskate filled me in on some questions to ask & what to write down as well as reassuring me it's ok to be a long term TTC'er - Thank you ❤️

sunshine no, no tests done after either. Both were felt it was just one of those things. The mc was a suspected ectopic although never confirmed so we sort of felt like it would have worked if it had been in the right spot. After ivf #3 was a chemical, all the failures painted a picture of poor embryo quality. I respond well to simulation (10-12 eggs), 90% fertilisation rate with ICSI, but only 1-2 good blasts. Never any to freeze.

oh Bluebird that was a quick turnaround with your appointments but I’m so sorry for your losses. That must be really hard for you and your DH. I hope your tests reveal something that can be treated 💐
I hope that I’m not being too nosey but did they do any investigations after your bfn or mc? It’s just awful this TTC business and wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Heart goes out to all of you on this board 😔 xox

I have a very nice gyn and she talked to me and I had scan inside and then lots of blood tests Smile

sunshine as my dh's sperm count was so low (8 mil) they didn't order more tests. They said we definitely needed IVF with those numbers. I didn't need an HSG as it didn't matter if my tubes were open as they would be bypassed in IVF. We had an appointment in the ACU a month later and first cycle 2 months later.

Unfortunately I've had 3 failed cycles (bfn, mc, chemical) so am now being referred for further testing. I'm having thyroid again, blood clotting, and karyotyping (me and dh) done.

Hi @bluebird3 that’s a positive outcome! we’re you referred for IVF there and then or did they do more tests first? Xox

Yes, all of the above. Plus a whole question list full too. Then when some of the test results come back, we had a test (internal scan) to see whether any sperm from the previous nights’ pre-arranged sex were still alive.
So: questions, an internal scan or 10, sperm analysis, blood tests at specific times. This all won’t happen on the first appointment though, and they’ll talk you through the whole process.
Good luck!

Hi @coconutgal I have my first Gynae appt next week too but already had tests.
We went to GP and referred to hospital and had the bloods/urine/SA/US and then a HSG and I got my BFP the following month!
I didn’t make my follow up with the Gynae as I found out I was pregnant but I miscarried and after our loss I went to GP again and because I’m all worked up about my age, she referred me because I didn’t get much results from them at first. Have you had any tests yet? I’m not sure what to expect but yeah, that’s sound advice about the list of questions to ask. I’ve got a few too. Just glad to get things moving as I’m going on a downer with this TTC mullarkey xox

Have you had any tests yet? If you haven't then they will probably take a history, might examine you, then order the basic tests, day 2/3 and day 21 bloods for you to confirm you are ovulating, blood tests to check your thyroid and Amh, and an internal scan. They will order a SA for your dp. If any of those results come out abnormal then will likely be repeated in 1-3 months.

My first gynae appt came after we'd had those tests done twice. They talked us through the results and recommended a treatment plan (IVF for us).

It's a bit different everywhere you go but most follow a similar-ish pattern.
