Where to go!?

I'm looking to book something up for the summer/Autumn. I haven't been on holiday for over 15 years so I feel very out of practise! It will be me, DH and DD who is 5. I'm open to anywhere.

We're not keen on just sitting by a pool or on a beach all day so I'm not sure an all inclusive resort is for us (happy to be proven wrong though).

Ideally not more than a 4 hour flight. I'm happy to do a few short breaks instead of a longer holiday.

No budget restrictions. All suggestions welcome!

In Switzerland? In summer, the Portes Du Soleil area is lovely. Lots of pretty villages on the Swiss French border, you can take cable cars and chair lifts to explore the whole area, it's stunning. Some villages have thermal spas - great being able to mess about in the water whilst looking at snow capped mountains. The little local trains are great too.

The area is pleasantly busy with mountain bikers and walkers, but not the coachloads of tourists you get elsewhere. There's also Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) to visit, and bathe in of course. Be aware food is very expensive on the Swiss side. Swiss national day is great fun, our favourite village has a flaming torch parade and a beauty contest with the winner walking through the village (it's for cows!).

We've also done a trip to Switzerland by train and ferry from England, taking in the glacier express, Lucerne, Zermatt and Chur - that's another fun trip,

Going back to the Jungfrau area, if you don't mind the busyness, there is a lot to see and do.

@InTheShadeOfTheOakTree

Oh that's disappointing to hear. Are there are any other less touristy areas you can recommend?

Interlaken is in a lovely setting, be aware it's a town heaving with tourists in the summer, as long as you don't mind that. We took our motorhome last year, pulled into a site that turned out to be the size of a village, turned round and left again Grin

@AlphaAlpha Oh wow that looks beautiful! Definitely the winning suggestion so far. I'm going to investigate this option properly this evening

I'd go to Greece for the first 2 weeks of September. Paxos probably, and hire a boat for some of that time. You can find quiet coves and have picnics on the beach or on the boat (they all have large sun canopies). Super child friendly, and great food in the villages.

I would book b&b somewhere like a Greek island- Rhodes is a good option, historical places to visit, nice little coves. We stayed in ixia which is a short cab journey from the airport and there's a bus into Rhodes town with lots of places for dinner (all love kids in my experience) most hotels can arrange car hire for a day or two so you can visit the rest of the island

We’ve done a lot of Greek islands in September and Majorca/Menorca in October. Weather always good although Greece can get wet and windy in the early autumn.

I just sorted passports and they've all arrived so we're all ready to go somewhere.

DD is in school but they're very good about authorising time off so I have no concerns with that if it falls outside of school holidays.

Weather I'm happy with anything really.

To be honest I'm open to any suggestions. All suggestions I've been given by friends have been for all inclusive resorts that they don't ever leave to explore which just isn't for us.

OP, is your passport in date?

If you have not been on holiday for 15 years, I would think twice about anything that is not on mainland UK, in the school holidays.

I suggest north Wales, DD would probably enjoy a trip up Snowdon on the railway, beaches and you might like Portmeirion for a day visit.

@Cluckycluck

Have you been on holiday in the UK? We haven't been abroad for the same number of years and are considering going back to Menorca next year. We do have budget restrictions though and would need to renew all passports. I loved Menorca. I'm not a big fan of beach holidays but Menorca was chilled and had great little towns and harbours.
Good luck with your search
