A week in Split - what to do?
LaSevillana · 23/04/2022 11:54
Hi everyone!
I've got a week in Split coming up soon and I haven't had much of a chance to look into stuff to do. I had originally planned to do 2 nights in Split, 2 nights in Hvar, a night in Brac, and then back to Split, but that feels like a lot of faff and moving around, and I think I'd be happier maybe renting an apartment in Split as a base and then doing day trips (maybe one overnight on an island?)
Does this sound like a good idea? Where would people recommend staying in Split? I'd like to be close to the Old Town and coast and not in a suburb but also don't sleep when it's noisy, so too central probably wouldn't work! I'd ideally like to be close to a decent supermarket so I can have breakfast and some dinners at home (I'm on a bit of a budget).
What would you recommend as day trips from Split? I'm definitely interested in going to Brac and Hvar but not sure how convenient it is or if it's possible to fully enjoy these islands without a car.
Grateful for any tips and advice!

Travel Man recently did Split and it made it look lovely - some nice ideas on there if you can download.
Really made me want to visit!

Thanks, I did see it and it made me very excited for the trip, but tbh I don't like their suggestions much because it's stuff I'd never do...£160 speedboat ride, dog walking, staying at an expensive boutique hotel with a rooftop jacuzzi, etc. I find they pick things that the average person can't really afford. I think it's such a beautiful place that it must be possible to still enjoy it on a budget.
I'm trying to find out more about ferries now...hard to gauge how busy they'll be and what the experience will be like. I don't do well with crowds!

Split is lovely but it is expensive and quite small - we did 2 nights there then 4 nights in Hvar. Personally I would go and stay over on at least 1 island.

Where in Hvar did you stay? Did you find 4 nights there a bit much?

Split is fabulous. Don’t miss the Sphinx.
Easy ferry day trips to Hvar. Nice harbour, castle and places to swim.
Recommend boat trip to see the Blue Caves. Suspect you can do that from Split though I did it from Hvar.
I haven’t been to Trogir but on my to do list.

Thanks! Is it easy to rock up and book a ferry the day of, or the day before, or do they get booked up in advance? This would be mid May, so I doubt peak tourist season but I know Croatia is really popular!
How did you arrange your excursions?
disconnecteddrifter · 23/04/2022 14:02
I stayed one nigjt in split, 2 in hvar, 2 in dubrovnik and one in split again. Croatia is so easy to get around. I think you'll be missing out if you stay a week in split

This is one of the cheapest places that we've stayed in Split, clean, central, lovely garden to sit in and very close to à supermarket and laundrette. We've never booked a ferry in advance, just walked up.
out this property I found on Hotels.com: Stipan Studio & Room - uk.hotels.com/hotel/details.html?hotelId=380670&intlid=aApp_PDP_ShareLinkClicked_Other&q-check-in=2022-05-16&q-check-out=2022-05-17&q-rooms=1&q-room-0-adults=2&q-room-0-children=0 Stipan Studio Apartment

The zip lines near Omis is about 30 mins away and was the highlight of our holiday a few years back

This was my initial thought but then I felt like moving every few days just seemed exhausting. My initial idea was 2 nights in Split (but arriving very late first day, so it would only be one full day), 4 nights in Hvar, then one more in Split, but I felt like it would be a bit faffy. Maybe not? Whereabouts in Hvar did you stay?
pisspants · 23/04/2022 14:45
there is a ferry that goes from Split to Dubrovnik which is a great way to see all the islands,it takes most of the day but is very relaxing and not expensive. You could do a couple of nights in Split, get the ferry to Dubrovnik for a couple of nights then catch the ferry back up breaking it up on an island en route. That would be a lovely break away and you'd get to see a lot of Croatia too. Krka waterfalls are also worth a visit near Split x

I can't remember where we stayed I'm afraid. We hired a little boat, went sea kayaking etc so really enjoyed Hvar.

Brac is also beautiful and only a 50 min ferry ride from Split into Supertar. There is also a catamaran direct to Bol with the famous zlatni rat beach.
Do not miss KRKA national park and a boat trip to Visovac island afterwards. I was astounded at the beauty of the scenery on the river and felt like I was in a film set.

Dubrovnik is so worth a visit. Walking round the 1000 steps of the city walks is fab. Take the lift up to the top. The Panorama Restaurant view is to die for. You can go ziplining over Dubrovnik from there.
Restaurant Nautika is one of the best restaurants ever. Lunch at the Gradska kavana Arsenal Restaurant, at the harbour, is to die for.
