European city break

Hi
We are looking for a European city break, it’ll be me, my parents and sibling.

The best break we ever went on was to Berlin. We loved how much there was to do and see, and how big it was. We’ve also been to Krakow, Barcelona, Copenhagen and Dublin. I’m already going to Paris. So somewhere different.

We like green space, interesting museums (like the east Germany one in Berlin), and being able to soak up culture but also plenty of coffee shops etc. Good public transport too.

Ideally no more than 2.5 hours flight from Manchester but this is negotiable for somewhere really good.

Thanks

I think Bruges doesn’t really have enough to do when compared to Berlin or Rome. I was not very impressed with Budapest either. It’s ok but some places are a bit run down and not very remarkable. It’s location is though. Vienna has more to see.

Stockholm has enough for a weekend and anywhere in Italy. Bologna is fantastic. The train station is a hub if you want to stay longer and travel further afield to Ravenna, Ferrara, Modena, Parma etc. You need a week there! Venice is still still stunning as is Rome.

Nice is excellent and Seville, Cordoba and Grenada. Madrid is great and so is Barcelona. I would rank all of these a one Gdańsk.

Sarajevo. Really different. Everyone thinks of the recent history and war but if you can look past that, there is so much more to it. Just the downtown area, with the Ottoman Empire style bazaar right next to the Austro-Hungarian Empire style department stores and apartment blocks. The food is delicious and the people are some of the friendliest and most welcoming you'll ever meet.

Prague is my favourite place we've been. City is compact but plenty of day trips (the skull church which I've forgotten the name of!). Petrin is an easy day out for more greenery.
Just been to Athens which is also great, lots of antiquity but also the National Gardens good with kids. We did a food tour which I would recommend as they take you off the beaten track

Quite a few of the recommendations are rather light on world class museums but I expect you will thoroughly research it before you choose.

Munich 100%
It has amazing beer gardens to visit in the summer. A huge park running through it (Englische Garten) or the Flaucher areas by the river. It has lots of museums and art galleries (often you pay 1 euro entry on a Sunday). It has lots of really nice restaurants. You can easily take the train out to the mountains for a hike or Salzburg for the day.

You can't go wrong with the Spanish cities - Malaga, Seville, Madrid (one of my favourite places in the world), Barcelona (though I wouldn't do Barcelona in the summer as it's so busy/hot), Granada. Never had a bad break yet.

For a different take, how about a December trip to somewhere like Basel? The Christmas markets are adorable and it's good fun going somewhere at that time of year.

Sounds like you'd like Vienna.

The Hague: forest park, beach, great museums, cafés, half hour train ride to all of Rotterdam, Delft, Leiden, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Gouda if you get bored. Fly to Rotterdam

If you love museums then it's definitely Vienna you need. You can also visit Salzburg while you are there (loads of trains all day long). Salzburg is magical (especially if you like classical music) and both places have amazing cake.

Oslo meets your criteria.
The perfect combination of interesting museums such as Astrup Fearnley and the Kon tiki museum.
You have the Botanical gardens, the Royal palace and the Vigeland park with its sculptures.
Great bars and cafes. I love going there!
Oslo is compact and dead easy to get around.

Hi back to Berlin? There's so much to see and do that one visit is nowhere near enough.

Malaga mentioned above is a great short break destination, or a weekend stop before going on to Grenada or further afield, Great food, museums, lovely place.

I would second Malaga, such a lovely city and very few tourists as most head straight to Marbs! Amazing good market, and the oldest sherry bar in the world just outside it is worth a visit- it's so traditional.

Could you do a day there walking round and seeing sights without too much trouble?

Another vote for Lisbon! Lovely climate, so much to do, and absolutely beautiful. Lots of hills, but traps to help you get up and down
