Caribbean in August?

Hi there,

Looking at the Caribbean in August. Both to Green & Amber countries. Never been there before. Like the look of Grenada and Turks & Caicos (but not the price there!)

I know it is hurricane season, and this is a worry. We were even looking at flying to St Lucia for 7 nights (Biz on plane) and nice hotel. But what if we do that and there is a storm for 5 days?

Any suggestions on where to go?

Oh, just realised you want to go this August, in which case there are no flights except repatriation flights for the foreseeable future (to Cayman)

You’d be better off in the Western Caribbean in those months.
Here in Cayman, we generally tend to see storms brew from Sept/Oct.
Rarely do we see storms in August although the weather can be unpredictable.

Hurricanes can and do happen, but you would be really unlucky to get one hitting the island you were on that precise week. Of course, it DOES happen (see PP above), but statistically you'll probably be okay.

Since there are so few countries that Brits are allowed to visit that will actually welcome us, your choices at this point aren't exactly boundless, so you may decide it's worth the hurricane risk.

Heh, we went to Antigua in early September for our honeymoon. Everyone said, including the travel agent, oh they don't get hurricanes that far out in August / September.

Cue Hurricane Irma on day 5 of our holiday. Absolute disaster, killed so many people across the Caribbean, destroyed swathes of homes and businesses. In our very privileged position we sat it out in a well built hotel with a generator keeping the powers on and then flew home early.

Biggest hurricane - Category 5 - to hit the region in decades.

Aruba!! Outside hurricane belt and the most beautiful island, especially if you stay in quieter Eagle beach
