Places to stay and go to in and around Manchester

Ive had a bad week and want to escape for a weekend. My mum has offered to have the kids, and I fancy heading towards the Manchester area.

Can anyone recommend a nice, but reasonably priced hotel in and around Manchester and also places to visit. I fancy having a look around coronation street, has anyone been ?

don't know if I have missed this but I would try the rosetti hotel in the centre of town - very nice... Didsbury House and 11 Didsbury Park hotels are fab- about 5 miles outside of manchester - loads of great restaurants and pubs around there as well..

To do - try URbis - fantastic experience - with great cafe downstairs, it is very close to the good shops and also try the art gallery - just done up and excellent

For food, try The Restaurant Bar and Grill, Simply Heathcotes, Stock, or Shimla Pinks (posh curry)

We fancied a weekend away without kids in February and after a search on Laterooms.com, I found Cranage Hall . It isn't a hotel - it's a conference centre with full leisure facilities, bar and gorgeous buffet breakfast. It's relatively near Manchester but in the 'Cheshire set' (Knutsford/Alderley Edge/ Macclesfield).

Hey - I did that too! Peer out of the window to see the Corrie set - don't know why I was so excited, have never watched Coronation Street in my life, despite being Mancunian born and bred

mummytosteven, my mum used to lift us up and make us crane our necks to see the Corrie set from the Science Museum!! I thought we were the only ones...

Urbis centre, Imperial war museum, shopping?!
You might get a late deal at somewhere like Malmaison or the Rossetti - both lovely, or try getting a late deal at The Lowry Hotel.

If you go to the Science & Industry museum (still free to get in - only car park fee ~£4) - find the 'hands on' kids bit - look out of the window & you can see right into the Corrie Set ! Both Dunham & Tatton are nice if weather is OK. I'd stick to the shops though if you are kid-free! The Lowry is cool if you are into art BUT even better theres a Discount Shopping Outlet opposite!! War Museum is also here - it's a bit gloomy but makes you think - don't suppose war is suposed to be fun.

There is also a small discount shopping outlet near the Lowry as well - Whistles Sales shop and other such things

Many years ago when I went to the Science Museum, if you went out to get the steam train you used to be able to peek over onto the Granada studios set - IIRC you could just about see the Sherlock Holmes set - don't think the corrie one is visible. Imperial War Museum is brill. You can get the tram to it then a briefish walk.

Me and dp stayed at a place called Sasha Hotel which was in the town but on a side road. Really nice, and quite reasonable priced as well I thought. Only problem was our room had no window so when we woke up at 10am, it looked as if it was still 4am.

Dunham and Tatton still good if you like National Trust type places and good cake.

If the weather is OK, Didsbury Park, Tatton Park (nr Knutsford), Dunham Massey (lots of room to run around at both of these), Imperial War Museum and Lowry at Salford Quays, Science Museum is huge and I think it's free now (ciry centre).

I found Granada Studios pricey but that was a few years ago.

If you are into Chinese food, the Yang Sing in Chinatown is reputed to be one of the best Chinese Restaurants in the country. There is also Chinatown around the princess st end of the city centre (towards manchester piccadilly station) and the famous canal street/gay village area near Chorlton St bus station. There is a huge UCI multiplex in the PrintWorks near Victoria Station. Shopping wise - Harvey Nichols and Selfridges near the Triangle shopping centre. Theatre wise there is the Royal Exchange and the Opera House on Quay St What you into - shopping/museums/theatre?

Budget - Premier Lodge GMex 1 - modern and clean and about £50 for the room. Good cheap food - Croma Pizza (off ALbert Square) or the fantastic curry mile in Rusholme. If you're looking to push the boat out - The Lowry Hotel and 'The Establishment' Restaurant.
