ideas for us and toddler in crete for sept?

Anyone been to crete (or somewhere else with lots of interesing history bits for us as well as nice beaches and yummy food) with a toddler? Any hotel recommendations? Happy to go selfcatering. Main prob seems to be finding somewhere where we don't have to spend our evenings in the same room as a child who is meant to be sleeping (would ideally have a 2bed apt, but a 1-bed would do as long as there was a living room for us. Ideally would like posh hotel with family suite but seems non existent!
