Hi all,
Any part time teachers out there on 0.4? I'm hoping to return 2 days a week and am wondering what my take home is likely to be. I'm on mps 6. I know there are calculators out there but they never seem to be that accurate for me. Also, I'm hoping to start a running baby classes on the one of my days off, does anyone have experience of running a business alongside teaching? How did your head teacher take it?
Thank you!

I’m retired now but worked part time as a teacher for many years. If you are M6 with no London allowance your pay should be just under £15,000 for 0.4 but academies may try to negotiate so decide what you are prepared to accept. It is nothing to do with the school what you do on the days you aren’t in school - you could have caring responsibilities, run a business or work in another school - that is up to you. There are two other things to watch. Get it in your contract that your 0.4 is only over two days or you could well end up with trapped time or your hours spread over several days, which is a pain and don’t agree to go in on INSET days not scheduled on your work days unless they pay you. My school tried to tell part timers that they had to go in and it took a bit of a battle to get them to realise they were wrong.

I liked a lot about working 0.4 and wouldn't have wanted to do more. I was primary. I had a job share which I mostly enjoyed as I had a great partner teacher and I felt like I had a class a bit still. I didn't enjoy it when in the year I was due to take maternity again that I ended up being used for cover all over the place. Not feeling like I had any ownership or place of my own. And feeling like I ended up a bit de skilled as I wasn't planning or doing many of the other things you would do as a class teacher. I didn't go in on my days off though they tried.. I think you have to be very firm. I took home just under £1200 a month on M6 but that was nearly 2 years ago now as I eventually decided to leave teaching. Good luck!

I’m on MPS6 and 0.4. My take home pay is £840 but I do pay tax on all my salary as I also get my teachers pension that takes me over the tax free threshold. I also pay into my pension.
