Raised LFT’s and bilirubin

Name changed as very outing.

Dd is 19 and become very poorly. Blood tests show very raised LFT’s - which are thankfully now dropping after 2 weeks. However, her bilirubin is increasing and is now over 200. Everything has been ruled out and hospital thinks it’s a virus, possibly glandular fever but not confirmed yet. She has severe pain behind her bellybutton which sometimes spreads to her lower back, she feel nauseous and struggles to eat because of this. When she does eat her symptoms get worse and her tummy gets bloated. She’s obviously very yellow due to the high bilirubin levels. Nothing takes away her pain and we’re all now really struggling as a family.

Any ideas what could be going on and what we can do to help the pain? ... gallstones, gallbladder, hepatitis viruses, hiv, pancreatitis, Gilbert’s syndrome all been ruled out.

TIA.

NEW YEAR UPDATE -

Liver levels still normal. Dd is on the mini pill, combined pill not an option. She now has problems with her full blood count, more tests today. I’m assuming it’s all because of her continued period bleeding. In herself she’s gaining in strength every week. She’s becoming less tired and is able to do more hours at work. Our hope is that by Easter she’ll be back to 100%.

Gynaecologist was lovely but no further forward really. She said everything looked normal on her past scan in hospital, the only way to diagnose endometriosis is via keyhole surgery - this is not something they’d do though as the outcome/treatment would be the same as if they didn’t officially know - treatment is to have the coil fitted. Dd was highly against this, but has now u-turned and is on the waiting list to have it fitted as she can’t deal any longer with the constant bleeding and horrendous debilitating pains and sickness when the bleeding turns into a ‘proper’ period. We need to check next week with liver consultant that dd can actually have the mirena coil fitted - I’m not sure about the hormone side of it.

Incidentally ... they won’t allow my other daughter to go on the combined pill due to her sisters liver problem.

Thanks to everyone on this thread - the support has been beyond anything I’ve known and has helped immensely in keeping me sane!

That is interesting. Thank you for responding. Do hope gynecologist can help.

fret ... they’ve referred her to gynae due to her persistent heavy and almost constant bleeding, and the pains that come with it, and also because they don’t want her on combined pill. She can go back on mini pill with monthly blood checks - they don’t want her on combined pill.

I’m not convinced her pill was ever the cause/problem so we’re gonna see how she is on mini pill with a view to trying combined again in 6 months or so.

So pleased to hear that her liver is completely normal at last. Such a relief for you.
Can I ask what has your DD been advised regarding using oral contraceptives in the future?

Thanks everyone! Latest bilirubin is 43!

When it goes below 30 (next bloods in 4weeks so should be by then), she can go back on mini pill and other bits and pieces she’s had to wait for.

She’s back at work only 10 hours per week and even that is taking its toll on her. Her body will still take months to catch up and be back to normal.

Its just lovely to see her largely normal again!

Ah thank you nan ... honestly, every time I look at her I just grin and am so happy. We nearly lost her once when she was 9, this came close to a transplant ... I’m sure someone ‘up there’ is looking after her, and doing a GRAND job! Grin

glitter .... she nearly is!!! GrinGrin Grin

She’s so much better! Bilirubin this week is 82 - normal is below 12. Honestly, we’re so relieved I can’t tell you! We can’t believe she finally turned that corner! Once she went into liver failure we thought that was it. The human body is truly a remarkable thing!

She starts back at work next week, reduced hours, they’re being great with her.

Period finally stopped 4 days ago, been bleeding from 5 August!

Back at liver clinic in 2 weeks ... dd is already planning everything she can do now that she’s almost normal Grin
