Fast growing, shade loving climber.

Any suggestions for two types of preferably fast growing evergreen climber, that loves partial/full shade.

Also a variety that loves full shade and damp conditions.

Preferably not Ivy! If it flowers- bonus!

My mum’s neighbour has something growing up against her fence, but we don’t know what it is. I’ll try and post a photo if I am able….

Thank you. The only thing with clematis is they go brown and a bit scraggy looking in winter, they’re also quite delicate? think they may get blown about a bit, our back garden is quite exposed to harsh winds.
Needs to spread across around 20 meters length of fencing too.

You could try climbing hydrangea, although it does take a while to get going and it's a clinger so may not like the fence that much. Virginia creeper is good, although it will eventually romp away and isn't evergreen. I wouldn't recommend Russian vine unless you want to be completely overtaken.

Star jasmine for the partial shade one. It grows relatively quickly: it's not a thug. But it is quite cheap so you could probably find a big one and cossett it a bit to give it a good start. Other than that it is very low maintenance.

In my fairly shady garden:
Vitis cogentiae - took a while but chucks out lots of branches & dinner-plate sized leaves

Wild honeysuckle - but if it grows over other things it smothers them. Easy to propagate. White/yellow flowers & lovely scent. Other, more genteel honeysuckles die as soon as the earth hit their roots.

Clematis montana - goes like a rocket, very hardy

Passion flower - grew nicely from a neighbour's cuttings but DH hates it & surreptitiously cuts it out. Has flowers & other people get it to fruit too.

Something like a Virginia creeper but with very pretty small, dark green & silver leaves

Can't remember which are evergreen.

Winter jasmine can be trained as a climber - not evergreen but a mass of small yellow flowers through the winter.

Another vote for star jasmine for a partially-shaded area. I have a few in my garden and the only one that’s thriving spends several hours in shade. The scent is amazing also.

Passionflower - I got one last year , about £25 - it's kept its lraves over winter and now loads of flowers (but no fruit yet)

Clematis was lovely when I bought it , but has done a very good impression of a totally pathetic weed since . Theres a few green stems so I'm biding my time

Sorry to jump on this thread, but I had a similar question to the OP. I've checked out star jasmine and crocus says it needs full sun. Will it thrive or survive in partial shade? I'm looking for a climber for a fence/trellis in an area that doesn't get too much sun.

I think star jasmine does like a little shade. I had one in full son and it struggled. I planted a rose in front of it, and it has put on a lot of growth.

Excellent! And is it sufficiently hardy to survive winter? Again crocus says needs frost protection...

I have two star Jasmine, one facing East, the other West so both have shade at some point in the day. They are both in planters and survive the Midlands winters. I might protect the planters with bubble wrap if severely cold weather was forecast, but there’s been no need to, so far.

Climbing hydrangias love damp shade. They are not particularly fast growing, but you could perhaps hide the fence with tall foxgloves (also shade loving) while they are getting established.

Evergreen Japanese honeysuckle (lonicera japonica) will grow in shade, it's a bit of a thug but if you want to cover a 20m fence it'll do the job (and the bees love it).

Second honeysuckle - not sure which type I have but it thrives in shade and sun alike and flowers in the shade.

I have a star jasmine in the shade which is not very vigorous, but it's in a container which may be a problem.

I have a Generous Gardener rose in the shade which is doing well and climbs to over 3m I think (mine is young still)

Thanks all. Some good ideas, barrows things down a bit. It’s a place which never gets the sun at all and is quite damp, that’s my only concern. Nothing growing at the moment, not even weeds!
