Where to start: In my forties with back issues

Hello,

I am an exercise newbie, and looking for advice.

I would like to get fitter, I am thinking some kind of strength training (weights).

I am not sure where to start! I have bought some 1.5kg weights, but I am unsure how to approach this, as I have had previous back issues (my back used to ‘go’ quite a bit), sciatica (its been two years, and the twinges are just about stopped) and I am on top of everything, not very fit, flexible or strong. I have a few kids so ‘down there’ is ok, but am nervous of jumping etc!

I am looking into Pilates for flexibility, but can anyone recommend any websites or videos for people like me, with my issues?

Want to strengthen and prevent muscle loss, and maintain bone density etc. I walk about an hour a day in total most days (school run!) but that is about it :( and I think it’s ok for base level fitness but definitely not enough.

Would appreciate any pointers Flowers

Marplefan, Hermione, Spudina - thank you for the links and suggestions.

I think the place my head is at right now, is i wish there was just one tried and tested thing - there are so many videos it is so overwhelming.

Swimming might be a good Lance to start, especially with your back

Try the 30 day free trial of Les Mills on Demand and try body pump and core

Take a look at P.Volve. Really helped with my back, become more flexible and build strength.

JaneJeffer - Thank you for the suggestion, I will have a look.

GregBrawlsInDogJail - That is an idea I will look into too, thanks. I guess I could do a few - I do want to be careful how I approach this.

Thanks!

Can you afford to do a few sessions with a PT? They can teach you the right technique so you are not risking your back and can give you a lot of confidence and something to build on. I pay my PT £40 per session.

Have a look at Margaret Martin on YouTube. It's for 50+ but it may suit you.
