Runners - why do I keep have

I really, really want to get for. Actually, I'm reasonably fit already thanks to my cycling commute. But I want to run a few times a week. I've been trying for perhaps a couple of years now, aiming at 5k every run. Things might go well for a few months, and then I get a sore hamstring, for example, that grounds me for a few weeks. Lately I've had this odd pain on the outside of my left hip join - I haven't been able to run for a couple of months... I want to cry.

My sister says this is why some people can't run, because running puts too much pressure on muscles. But I wonder if it's me being an awkward runner??

Look up iliotibial band pain. Foam roller exercises are supposed to sort that.

Stretching and strengthening should help. But the underlying cause could be anywhere in the leg, causing some sort of unlevelness.

I get aches and pains from time to time (I put it down to age), mainly Achilles' tendon, hamstring and calf. When it happens, I need to rest for quite a while and start again gently. Thinking about engaging core and keeping hips straight does seem to help everything.

I've also started taking glucosamine again - i think the jury is still out on whether it actually works particularly well, but I find it helps me.

Make sure your trainers are right for you. Also good to do some dynamic warm up before running and post run stretches. Foam rollers are also good though rather painful!

Have you had your gait checked? If you go to a good running shop they can check it for you.

Also maybe google hip stretches and do these pre-running.
