I'm booked to have a sports massage next week. Concentrating on my tight shoulders and upper back.
Was talking to someone today who who was saying how much hurt. I know it's a deep tissue massage but it's my first one so want to know if i need to brace myself!

It won't be comfortable but hurt is a bit far. It shouldn't go beyond a 6/7 out of pain (briefly) on the pain scale. The trick is to relax into the deep bits because if you tense up you kind of negate the point. Enjoy it. They are actually blissful - in a type 2 fun way.

What SwearyGodmother says.

Although they can hurt if you don't stretch a particular tight muscle properly after exercise like you have been specifically instructed to

But afterwards you feel like you are made of rubber.

Oh. I would say no pain, no point... Maybe I just have more stiffness than other people. There's always a few points where it seems unbearable, but yes you need to relax it rather than fight it.

It can be uncomfortable especially shoulders which afterwards generally will hurt more the next day my whole arm felt like a lead weight.

Shots is right about the stretching mine just locks up over time when I get lazy about not going to boring yoga and just doing heavy weight lifting sessions.

Just relax when you go for yours some are better at them than others

Thanks everyone.
Im expecting uncomfortable so im sure it will be fine. :)

Ive always had issues with my shoulders being tight but throw in Kickboxing training twice a week and the added stress of currently living in the middle of a building site of an extension being built ... Im pretty knotted up.

I tore my calf muscle and was recommended to have a sports massage.

It was very painful on my calf, almost unbearable. But it did really help.

If it starts hurting then it's really important to let your therapist know cause if you're tensing your muscles your therapist has to work harder to try and relax them so the pain will get worse! You don't have to be quiet like a relaxation massage, giving feedback during the massage will help your therapist target the areas that feel restricted to you. After your massage you should focus on your aftercare as part of your fitness routine, keep stretching and keep mobile so as to get the best result from the massage!
