Using 2nd embryo

We’re planning to use our second embryo which was frozen once we became pregnant 3 years ago. I need to lose weight and get my diabetes under control we were told in medical terms that it may not survive the thaw - has anyone experienced this ? I’m working full time and raising a toddler I’m finding hard to find motivation and time and I’m scared that if we don’t do it soon it’ll not work.

It may well not. We thawed out 3 last year, 1 arrested / died pretty much straightaway. But the other 2 were found to be abnormal -we had defrosted them for genetic testing and the surviving 2 were abnormal. So most likely all were poor quality. You got a baby out of that batch of embryos so lm guessing the quality is way better. Our clinic claimed 95% of defrosted embryos survive. Good luck with it all.

I had a 90% time in range and didn't expect my child to be badly influenced by my diabetes. But she was. So I really recommend that you focus on that the coming three months

I'm not sure what to tell you. I did get pregnant from a FET while very overweight but my diabetes was under control. The weight makes tge chance of succes lower and the chance of moscarriage higher, but that doesn't mean that it's not possible. But I'm not sure how bad your lack of diabetic control will be. I'll tell you this: my control was really good during pregnancy and my daughter still arrived too big and with glucose problems needd

Hello - I’ve had both scenarios whereby my embryos (with own eggs) didn’t thaw correctly and also an embryo using a donor egg didn’t either.

The embryos (3 of them) with my eggs were thought to be poor egg quality (hence then needing a donor); with the embryo with the donor egg, it was a perfect looking 5 day blastocyst that in theory should have been absolutely fine. I don’t know why it wasn’t and this wasn’t really discussed tbh other than to say that it didn’t contract properly during the process. There are no guarantees it seems. We had 2 thawed out ahead of a transfer and the other was perfect, transferred and I’m now just under 14 weeks pg. We have one more embryo w donor egg on ice so would face the same question if we were ever to use it.

I think the difficulty is that they just don’t know what it’ll do until it thaws and of course you have to be in the FET round with treatment to get to that point. Bit of a rock and a hard place. I guess if you decide to go for it then at least you know you’ve tried whereas if you don’t then you’ll never know what that embryo would do!! Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

You might get more specific replies regarding embryo thawing in the Infertility section as plenty of people will have experience of frozen embryos (though not your exact circumstances as they might not need a donor if it didn't work out).

Unfortunately I think there is no way of knowing if the embryo will survive the thaw, but there is also less time pressure in the sense that success doesn't depend on your current age.

I don't know if you need donor sperm or eggs or both, and whether you'd contemplate starting again if the frozen transfer doesn't work. You might not know until you're in that position, but you may not end up in that position at all.

Why not concentrate on getting your diabetes as well managed as possible, that may benefit your current situation and energy levels never mind anything else.

If you are a same sex couple could your partner carry this time?
If not, would the toddler be at nursery by the time a new arrival came?
