Alternative to Duolingo

I'm using Duolingo to learn a bit of a language before going on holiday, but a lot of the vocabulary is not terribly useful ("The armadillo is not a cook"). Is there something like Duolingo that focuses a bit more on tourist vocab?

How about Babbel or Memrise?
Or try to google "x language online or for vacations" which very often gives good results

Memrise is really good and you can get user created content for just about any topic you might want to learn as well as the main courses. I’m a teacher and I put all the vocabulary I want the children to learn in bespoke sets so I can tailor it to their needs and ability.

Babbel doesn't offer the language I'm after.

I can't get my head around Memrise. The freebie sample doesn't give me a clear idea of how it works. How do you tailor it?

Pronunciation is clearer and easier to learn from Memrise than from Duolingo.

I am doing Russian in Duolingo and one of my phrases was "the towels are in the taxi"

What language? You can use a course in your chosen language in Memrise, though I notice a huge increase in the pressure to get you to sign up - if you don't pay you can't use it offline.

Having said that, I love it! But some of the sentences are weird.

I have been using duolingo but it is really slangy, so I have stopped. I want a more correct version, but can’t find an alternative.

Memrise has recently changed so you can only produce your own courses on Decks (google Memrise Decks) the Memrise search function is a bit rubbish but if you google something like “Memrise, French, Family” google is generally quite good at finding things. I have never paid for Memrise and have used it for years both to teach students and for my own learning.

I took out a subscription to Memrise - not much more than buying a couple of books, and I want the flexibility of using it online and offline.

So far, it's great for vocabulary and pronunciation, but not for sentence structure.

I'm trying to learn European Portuguese. Duolingo only has Brazilian Portuguese, which has different pronunciation and some differences in grammar, style and vocab. I'm using Duolingo with the sound off, to practice sentences. I speak French, so I've already got the basic structure of a Romance language.

I've been using the Tandem app. So many good features but the main thing is you actually get to speak to text and speak to real people - native speakers - the language you want to learn. One even volunteering to show us around Lyon when we go. And it's free! I can't recommend it highly enough!
