So annoying. The government cannot wrote a handbook to cover every single possible scenario and interaction so why can't people just use some initiative?

If I see one more post asking others if this is allowed, if that's allowed. It's silly.

If I see one more post about going to work, boris said EVERYONE can carry on working if they can't do their job at home. It's that simple. What else do people want?

I think some are just looking for every excuse to wriggle out of going to work

Are driving lessons essential?

In the first lockdown key workers were allowed to have driving lessons and tests but nobody else was. I've no idea what the rules are this time round.

Bother. My son has his test in early January but it may be optimistic to think it will happen :( And he needs lessons.

I don't think it's always that clear. For example, a PT cannot work in a leisure centre because it's closed. But can they meet one client outside? Even in a private garden, as it's not for a social purpose?

Probably so. They expected to not make the announcement until this afternoon, but were forced into it on Saturday due to the leak.

And then they had to get some information out there to avoid the mess when they had the vague 'the north is back in lockdown' announcement late one Friday night a few months ago without any clarification as to exactly what they meant by 'the north' and 'lockdown'.

Maybe riding lessons will pause, but obviously they still need to carry on with the horse care aspect. Perhaps people will still be allowed to ride their own horses on bridleways and roads?

Horse care was permitted under 'livestock welfare' during the first lockdown.

The premise of your thread is idiotic OP.

Currently we know there will be a new lockdown in England in two days. We have guidance, which absolutely, without question leaves some significant gaps, but still no actual legislation. The rules themselves will supposedly be tomorrow, although some of the covid legislation has been published less than an hour before coming into force.

With all this in mind, the only way anyone could think it's silly for people to be asking if things are allowed is if they've no idea what they're on about.

It does say in the guidance that full details of which businesses can/can't operate will be issued when all this actually becomes law. I'm not saying it's the right way to handle it but why not wait for that to happen and see if it answers all the questions?

Disclaimer: I wouldn't trust the government to correctly answer the question 'What day is it?' but let's just play along and keep pretending we think we know what they're doing

If you live in a rural area and want to be able to get a job, then yes, driving lessons are essential.

As a temp I'm not looking for an excuse not to work as I won't get paid if I don't. However I'm mighty annoyed that the assignment I'm currently on was sold to me as 4 days a week at home remote working and one day in the office. Office now saying they're staying open and I'm on the rota 5 days a week. Bloody ridiculous in the middle of a pandemic.

Well considering all one to one dance, drama, music, sport and private tuition is having to close unless it's a key worker learning to drive I wouldnt have thought it was allowed.

I’m assuming I will continue to work from my office, which is a publishing company. But it’s also a print shop too, so not exactly essential. Or is it?

With driving lessons it would be difficult to be covid secure, perhaps the 'driving instructors association' has issued guidance?

Is it enough to wear masks, sanitise between students and drive around with the windows open? Genuine question.

I think it sounds fine if it’s done like that. If I was an instructor I would continue because it’s “work” technically. It seems a grey area.

My instructor said that he stopped all lessons for 3 months last time and retrospectively didn't think he needed to. He got awarded a grant but only 3 months after lockdown started and he said it didn't cover his losses. Therefore he's going to try to continue this time but isn't sure if customers are permitted to continue.

During the last lockdown, they were allowed for essential workers who needed to pass their driving test for their essential work, they were allowed if wearing masks, cleaning surfaces between lessons, ventilation, etc.

We're still waiting for confirmation of whether my son's driving lessons will continue - his instructor hasn't been told yet whether he can continue. Regarding whether they are essential, when he's passed his test, my son will be driving to his job in a shop which sells essentials, so he'll probably be classed as a key worker, so although he's part time, I guess it's pretty essential for full time key workers. Waiting to see if he'll need a letter from his employer if this is the case. Interestingly, the instructor did have a pupil who tested positive for covid a few weeks back and the instructor didn't manage to catch it, so something must be working!
