Do you think there will be social unrest due to Coronavirus?

I’ve just come back from the supermarket earlier where there was - literally - nothing on the fresh shelves, nothing left bread wise, cereal, milk, pulses, soup, loo roll, etc - like many supermarkets.

Yet I’m still seeing people out in restaurants and pubs etc.

Do you think this mismatch between those who choose to socially distance and those who don’t, or the mismatch between those who panic buy and those who don’t, will cause people to be at odds with one another?

We have been told to self isolate at work if we have a sore throat, yet a colleague stays at work because ‘it’s definitely not Coronavirus because I have a snotty nose’

Yes they are probably right but who’s to say they aren’t and are spreading it round? Many of my colleagues feel they’re being unfair.

I think we are heading for some sort of social unrest.

Looking at how volatile French social unrest can be, and how the British are more stoic in the same circumstances. Then looking at how France is dealing with ever stricter measures and some areas locked down. I really don’t see any grounds for alarm

But I suppose that’s a bit of a dull way of looking at it

Of course people will start to behave like animals, does no one remember the riots in 2014? And for what reason? None. We've already had people stealing whole trolleys of food, or mugging people for toilet roll. Costco had security escorting people to their cars last week due to muggings. The people of the UK are animals.

No - emergency powers will allow anyone who starts acting like an idiot be robustly dealt with.

It wasn’t ‘goady ’ @ChardonnaysPetDragon, merely a comment on how it’s interesting (And a bit scary) to see what happens as our social norms erode.

@defthand I agree, people keep up appearances for a while but underneath is a thinly disguised belligerence. I’ve seen it this week with my colleagues and in the shops.

It’s interesting to see how people behave when the social veneer crumbles.

I’ve lived in a lot of countries and I have to agree that underneath the normal politeness there is a greater degree of belligerence here. And that’s starting to show...

I think next week people are going to start getting antsy and restless.

I think we might get social pressure applied to people who are in public with symptoms by which I mean disapproving looks muttered comments and the like, but hopefully it won't rise to the level of civil unrest😲

In June I expect a lot of idiots who panic bought huge amounts of sanitisers and loo roll and nappies and calpol to try and return them.

I think it's a possibility. People do things in crisis situations that they wouldn't normally do, especially when they or their children get hungry.
