Who is keeping their children home from school from next week?

Not looking for a debate I’m just asking how many people are now keeping their children home from school or seriously considering it?

The NHS staff I know will be off work looking after their DC’s if schools close so not sure how closing schools is going to help as there will be even more staff shortages.

My theory is that the numbers are low because of the weather. We've just had a week or so of wind and rain.
Once the weather turns nice, I think that's when there will be a spike in numbers.

Saudi have done the logical thing and have stopped travel. Isreal are also considering this.

Once the first few cases were confirmed outside China, this is really what should have happened then.

And thinking about this more, if I'm going to get it I would rather get it now before it hits the UK at an epidemic level where services will be stretched, and the chances of it mutating increase.

We had 4 cases locally last weekend. Now we have 6. I pulled DS from nursery last week but he'll be going back tomorrow. I know it's still early, but I did expect there to be more cases than we currently have.

I’ve just seen there’s a school fairly local (25 ish minute drive) closed tomorrow for a deep clean due to a suspected covid-19 Insuspect this is actually one of the confirmed cases in my county case in a parent. Expecting to re-open Tuesday.

Still doesn’t change my answer though.

I’ve someone in my class (Nursery) keeping her daughter off at the mo as she has complex medical issues and is at great risk if she caught it. She’s already been gravely I’ll twice due to viruses she’s contracted and she’s only 3.

Closing the schools seems extreme at this point in time. A levels start in two months time, students can’t afford the time out.

Yes, it will be, but that's not why schools are closing. Shutting schools does reduce transmission - it saves lives because it allows health services to cope rather than being overwhelmed by a shorter larger peak. Even if all the same people got it in the end, it would save lives by ensuring there are enough ICU beds. The way we're going is the way of Italy - people in ventilators in corridors and on the brink of collapse.

The choice is lockdown (reduce transmission, close schools, stop big gatherings) or uncontrolled spread and breakdown of the NHS.

The virus is here to stay though. Let's hope there's a vaccine in a year rather than 18 months.

No. Our school is sending out daily updates from the Government and will only close if they are advised to by Public Health.

Personally I think that all travel should be stopped. It can't be brought in from other countries if no-one is allowed to travel. But of course they won't ground all the planes and ferries will they? School is the least of the problems .

We live in a very rural area so you hope that it might pass you by, but at the same time, local people have been skiing in Italy and so on, so it could reach us the same as anywhere else.

Why would I want to disrupt my child's education on a what if?
If they aren't well or the school gets closed, then, of course, they don't go. But otherwise well, get to school.

It also sends them an odd message, and anyone considering doing this is in for years of fun. They will clock on and want the same for the various seasonal and local outbreaks of whatever 😂

I'm in the at-risk group because of health. They've known about the importance of hygiene and cleaning up after themselves for years.

I think some people are thoroughly overexcited and wallowing in the drama of all this tbh. I'm frightened. I have asthma, I'm in my late forties, fairly good health but even a simple cold can knock me for six and bring on a big asthma flare up. It's good to be prepared as far as possible but constantly predicting the what ifs and potential disaster doesn't do anyone any good does it? Surely you're just living through it twice? Weeks of fear and worry and predicting disaster followed by it actually happening. I'm hoping beyond hope that schools don't need to close and that we can weather this without too much disruption. Others seems to be positively dancing with anticipation of the drama and disruption. I find it quite odd tbh.
