Dinosaur, Don't worry, healthy babies are born to drug addicts and alcoholics as well as malnourished women. A baby is like a parasite, it will draw all it needs from its host. As responsible mums we just want to be reassured we're doing best for baby. Not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer - its all about statistics. I got seriously drunk in all three of my pregnancies before I knew. Two were big bouncy healthy girls. I've no doubt this one will be healthy (if its meant to be). Worrying is not going to be productive. Think positively and all will be well.

oh god I am panicking now, I was not drinking at all while ttc this time, but several people on mumsnet were of the opinion that this was a bit too extreme, and that drinking in moderation was okay - so I had two G&T's one night - do you think I've harmed the baby...

Harman, I am pregnant (10 weeks) with a 6 mth baby and when I tried to come off the prozac, I went a bit manic and copuldn't think straight. Go back on it. You are more likely to concieve if you are relaxed! PS I had unexplained infertility 18months ago - relaxation thru' homeopathy, reflexology and prozac helped!

dinosaur, It's something to do with the alcohol by volume. Years ago they recommended a glass of red wine a day!! during pregnancy.

just out of curiosity tillymint, what is it about spirits that makes them so much worse than wine?

Report
tillymint · 04/02/2004 17:08

Prozac is fine, also occasional wine (not spirits) but smoking is the one you should give up, or at least cut down to max 5 a day if giving up totally is too stressful. Saying that I conceived all three babies when I'd over drunk and over smoked that night!

i would wait and see, and test as early as possible.

no I wouldn't. Well, ok, I wouldn't smoke anyway, but that's definitely the hardest to stop. I was ttcing for 3yrs and at the beginning did what bobthebaby did - abstained from alcohol from ovulation to af. however as things became more desperate I found that the only way to stay sane was to adopt a more 'normal' lifestyle - i.e. to behave as though I wasn't totally focussed on ttc. I think in your circumstances the chances are slim and the risks are pretty minimal. But if you ARE concerned, caffeine should be added to the list too - sorry!
btw Robert Winston does not advocate giving up alcohol while waiting for the result of fertility treatment - on the contrary he suggests an occasional glass of wine can help reduce stress. now that's the kind of advice I like to hear!

In an ideal world you would give up those things but life goes on and whilst I do not advocate smoking and alcohol, in fact I loathe it, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself but try to cut right back for the couple of weeks wait!!!
BTW, apparantly the critical development time where baby is most at risk I read is weeks 3-10. If you think about it takes 7-10 days after fertilisation anyway for the egg to implant too.

Agree with bunny and bobthebaby...cut out the first two and see Dr about the Prozac.

Er...when will you know Harman?

When I stopped using the Pill I never drank alcohol once I had had sex that month and before af. It made me very boring at parties, but I made up for it once af arrived. I had read somewhere that day 17 was the most crucial, and this is before most women would know they were pg. It was probably rubbish, but it was right next to a picture of a brain with foetal alcohol syndrome. I just couldn't get that out of my head.

About prozac, I would ask your doctor first as you need this, alcohol and ciggies are a choice.

I would wait and see. I don't think it can cause that much harm in the first couple of weeks.....

I would give up smoking and cut alcohol down to a safe limit. I dont know about prozac, I dont think you should stop taking it without medical advice. When I got pg with ds, I only stopped smoking when I did a positive pregnancy test, now I think that was pretty irresponsible of me. Having had 2 miscarriages since I am more cautious. I am ttcing right now and will try to abstain from the booze until I get a AF or a positive pg test.

Harman, sometimes its better to be safe than sorry. Say you do become preg than at least you know that you did everything proper for your babies sake!
