Chronic pain
Fibromyalgia and skin sensitivity
itsme2023 · 11/01/2023 02:49
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 17 years ago so thought I had a fairly good handle on unusual symptoms but have a new one going on and wondered if anyone else has this and any suggestions to help, if it is related to fibro.
In the past few days everything has got more sensitive, joint pains, pain relating to temperature (if my feet get cold it feels like someone has taken a hammer to my bones and I struggle walking) but also my skin has gone super sensitive.
I was wearing a vest top and my arm rubbing on my top has made my skin feel like its on fire. Ive had to put a long sleeve top on to stop the feeling of my skin rubbing against my top, but its still burning. Ive had to take my watch off as that feels like its burning my skin too. Its like my skin has got so sensitive.
Is this likely fibro related?

I'm trying to get back into the dr's for any official diagnosis however I'm perpetually tired , I'm talking struggling to get through working day, needing 13/14 hour sleeps often/days off and feeling extremely lethargic and lacking focus. From this I'm also getting really extreme migraines and slower cognitively when really tired. Also if it get's too cold I'm in pain and exhausted, I'm also in pain 70 percent of the time currently on my left knee, hip, back and neck mostly and my skin has been constantly itchy to the point where I feel like it's burning. I originally thought it was solely hypersomnia and osgoodschlatters , however more recently it has suggested to be something else.

Hi, I'm suffering too at the moment. In fact you've helped me realise it's prob my fibromyalgia. Sleeping very badly, brain fog, worse of all is the pain, like tingling, down one side of my body, and also a dull ache in my foot and in my hip. Itchy burn sounds familiar, too. Managing with ibuprofen. This morning decided to tackle my diet - I put on weight over Christmas and that can't help. I also get migraines but am better at stopping those before they get too bad, with drugs, caffeine, and rest.
Thank you for starting this thread. I hope we can chat on here about these symptoms. I'm really suffering, now I come to see it. Maybe the cold and damp are not helping, I literally feel it in my bones.

I have Fibromyalgia, I get the sensitivity, I can't wear a bra any more as the band feels like I'm in a vice, I have to wear crop tops instead. Sometimes just brushing past something feels like red hot needles in my skin. Are you on any medication? I have gabapentin, amtriptyline & dihydrocodeine for the pain.

Yes, it’s actually a very common symptom of fibro, but luckily not one that I have yet experienced (diagnosed 8 years).

That definitely sounds along the lines of fibromyalgia but you definitely want the Doctors to rule out other things first as some other things which are similar can be treated (I know of someone who had a fibro diagnosis for 8 years before finding out it was a treatable blood disorder!)

I am the same with the cold, its definitely affecting me, especially in my feet.
I am currently dieting, doing low carb and I do find I feel a bit better on that. I also take lots of vitamins that help, biggest one I can recommend is a decent dose of magnesium and its always worth checking your vit D levels (mine were awful a few years ago).
The cold is definitely affecting me but I also find little things can set me off. The other day I was moving furniture and crushed my fingers, they are just bruised but since then my pain seems to have got so much worse and im wondering if that has triggered this.
You would think so many years after being diagnosed I would be used to it, but its the most bizarre thing that always seems to have new things coming along.

I take pregabalin at the moment, I also have amytriptyline, baclofen and codydramol. My GP is actually amazing and lets me have a lot of input into my own meds, I did wonder if it was worth trying to increase the pregabalin but I only dropped it a few months back. However if this sensitivity doesnt go away it might be worth trying it.
I do vaguely remember having something like this a long time ago (my Husband reminded me of it this morning) but cant remember how long it lasted or what helped.

Hi @itsme2023 I have fibromyalgia and also allodynia which sounds like your symptoms as I get similar. Skin sensitivity to temperature and touch, feels like sunburn, itchy and what feels like cold running on it. It's awful. I used to be on Duloxetine but tapered off in Nov Dec last year. My symptoms and pain are through the roof now, the Duloxetine did help somewhat. Nothing eases my Allodynia at all sorry 😞 x

Yes this is very similar, I have said it feels similar to sunburn.
Thats such a shame there isnt much they can do to help. I do notice certain clothes seem to be making it worse, but it seems to flare up and then ease off, then flare up again, does this sound like yours?
My DH pointed out that I had similar years ago and it just went, but seems like its come back.
