What is the best gift you have bought your dad?

Something he has really loved rather than the standard gifts...

It was a bit of a splurge but it was his 60th, we got him a Barbour jacket.

A present that he loved (but is not very lockdown friendly) was wine tasting. The event I chose was actually wine and cheese tasting. Me and my dad went together, so I think that added to the present for him.

The gifts I can remember he loved were a telescope and a private car reg. I usually buy him books but once every so often buy something to really surprise him. This year I've bought him a mahogany tabacco holder from 1840. He'll either love it or hate it.

My dad usually gets an activity gifts that we do together with DS. But that's out of the window this year 😡

So watching, because he's the only person I haven't bought yet.

I've bought my Dad a personalised bottle of whiskey. That's his favourite nightcap and it says ' to the best Dad and Grandad in the world'. I'd like to get him something else but he has everything.

Watching! Need ideas myself.

I've bought my dad fancy lego sets for the last few years, he loves building them on Christmas Day.

Years ago when photo books were just becoming a thing, I made him one with all the old copies of his family photos. It had black and white pictures of his parents, their old house abroad etc. He really treasures pictures and is the family photographer so he loved it.

In more recent years I got him a Cornish shellfish box delivered. It had lobster, prawns, crevettes etc. He loves Cornwall and seafood and it was something he thoroughly enjoyed but never would have treated himself to.The following year he actually asked for vouchers from there so he could get himself some more. He never asks for anything so I knew it was a winner!

jelly79 · 05/12/2020 12:01

This shellfish sounds amazing! But my mum would be all over that :)

I have seen a print of 16 cassettes and they can be personalised so getting all the family to suggest the song that reminds them of him!! He loves music! And some gin :)

My dads a nightmare and he doesn’t really like anything because he has everything already.

This year I have bought him expensive car cleaning products as he’s just bought himself his dream car, I know it’s not particularly exciting but it’s something useful that hopefully he will get some use out of.

I've got my dad a wireless otoscope from amazon - you can dig out your ears and see it on your phone Grin

BeaLola · 07/12/2020 22:59

Before they were popular a photo calendar with family pictures from the years

Any Acer I've ever bought for his garden

About 3 years ago an Aunt gave me some old family photos. Amongst them was a photo copy of a photo of my Dads Mum in her early twenties (my Dad is now 89) - it had torn edges and sone tears. I took it to one of those photo shop places and had it copied and restored and enlarged to A4 size & then I framed it. When I gave it to my Dad he was literally speechless and then he cried - he had never see the picture of her and of course there are hardly any photos of his parents in existence. He loves it, shows it to all visitors and gets Misty eyed every time he tells the story . Best present ever - I will never forget his face Smile

Flupibass · 07/12/2020 23:02

The present my dad liked the most and asked me to buy again was a very cheap little book of french crossword puzzles, clues in English, answers at the back!

That's totally amazing. I didnt know it was even a thing Grin

My dad always says he doesn't need or want anything so he is terrible to buy for. I think about getting him so really good cologne and maybe a shirt, he likes them.

sashh · 08/12/2020 09:57

After a conversation about languages and how on a family holiday he could suddenly understand people when we were in Friesland I have been sending books on linguistics (a couple I had my own copy and a few others were recommended on here when I asked).

Not sure what I'm getting this year.

Lottieskeeper · 08/12/2020 13:58

My dad is really tricky. He doesn't have many hobbies, he's not materialistic. And dosent like surprises. All presents I've ever got him have gone down like lead balloons.

Last year I randomly struck gold with a mix of exotic Dahlia tubers. He's been getting some really unusual looking flower heads and was dead pleased.

This year I'm going for unusual tomato seeds and some shortbread biscuits made by 4 yo dd.

OMG!! I never knew there was such a thing but that would be brilliant for DH. All year he has been having hearing problems and the GP said he needed to get them syringed. What with lockdown he hasn't got round to it but this little beauty might help.

MrsWonderland · 09/12/2020 16:24

I bought my DH a Daunt's Book Subscription. I ended up buying one for my mum for her birthday too as it was such a hit and both are now renewed every year.

They recipient can speak to Daunts (or go into a store) and share all their likes and dislikes and will then get a personally chosen book every month in the post - fact/fiction or a mixture - hardback or paperback if preferred.

Probably the best and most loved presents I've ever given and a gift that really does keep on giving.

MrsBooks · 09/12/2020 17:53

Glad I've helped a couple of people with the Otoscope 😁😁

I didn't know it was a thing either until I saw a video of one on TikTok and I knew I had to get it for him 🤣

Bananaman123 · 09/12/2020 18:09

Golf trousers, they were in the regatta sale for 20 and have a coating on them so water just run off (like under armour stormwear). They are smart looking too.
