Sick pay for CMs

Can I ask the CMs here how many weeks they are paid if they are off sick? Ours has been off for 4 weeks now. It's not a problem as someone is providing cover for now, but CM is not showing any signs of recoverig and the CM covering has said this might need to be the last week (fair enough).

Dh is asking how many weeks sick we should pay. I said I would ask MNers what is standard. Thanks.

hope your cm gets better soon, she must have ben poorly to be off this long - poor soul!

The reason she has never been sick yet is possibly becasue as a self employed person she knows she will not get paid.

If dh is ill he will ohone in sick from his LEA based teaching but I have seen him drag himself in, in some right states for his self employed stuff.

no my cm doesn't expect sick pay either. i pay for 50 weeks a year regardless of whether ds goes to her or not as i am paying for the space as well as her services. but not when she is unavailable (sick or two weeks hols).

No matter how good she was I could not afford to pay her and also pay for alternative care or take an unpaid day off myself (theortiecal sutation as I don;t use a CM)

yeah a cm is diff from a plumber i agree cos you dont have a plumber looking after you most precious 24/7, but the no sick pay was something i accepted as self employed?..if you chose to pay, then im sure the cm would be extremely grateful and would return the favour(ie helping out short notice etc, when you needed!)

Agree with jura. Dh is a self employed teacher.

If he is too sick to teach the parents don;t pay him. If he decides to take holiday the parents don't pay him.

Actually many employees don't get paid when they are sick either.

If I am sick I have 3 waiting days with no pay then I get a small amount of statutory sick pay which my employer claims form the government.

I have insurance to cover me if I am long term sick.

because holiday is given with notice and help will be given to provide other care or co incide with parents hols..sick distrupts the parents and is usually given with no notice..dont get me wrong as a cm, id love to get sick pay, but i just couldnt condone it!

I don't get sick pay. I don't know any childminders who get it. That's why childminders are never off sick, unless they are really really unwell!

CMs are self-employed and standard contracts state that if they aren't available to care for your child you don't pay them

Report
Greensleeves · 19/02/2007 19:14

They're sef-employed, aren't they? I wouldn't pay them sick pay.

Something no one has yet mentioned is the CONTRACT. Read your contract carefully. It may mention what happens in the event that the childminder is sick.

Typically though, I feel a childminder would not charge. However, there is nothing stopping you from paying something, it's up to you. But please look at the contract and see what it says.
