Childcare

Childminders, how difficult is it if different children have different diets?

My dd has been going to CM for 2 weeks now. Initially I sent dd's food with her but CM prefers to give all mindees the same once they are off baby-food because easier. She is okay about dd being veggie and has bought some veggie-burgers from tescos. I can understand it is difficult to be cooking / heating up lots of different types of food at meal times.

DD is 12 months old.

But its the snacks she is giving that I'm a bit alarmed about. Last week she had those snacky garlic bread pieces in a bag (must be loaded with salt and saturated fat) and today I have just read in her book that she had chocolate buttons! I am shocked as I already told the CM I dont want dd having biscuits or cake or juice because of the sugar content.

I will have to talk to her tomorrow, but just wondered if she's giving her these things because the other older children have them and its easier than not giving to dd.

Also, will she think I am being really pernickety if I say I dont mind her having certain types of veggie frozen stuff but not linda mcartney sausages because of their mega salt content?

babyfox and katymac - what sorts of lunches do you provide for the children in your care?

just so I can get some ideas

thank you all for your advice

I think I will send bits and pieces in for lunches -some of it might give her some ideas she just hadnt thought of but she would be happy to buy in herself, together with the suggestion of negotiating a menu.

and insist on fruit and oatcakes for snacks

I wouldnt ask for a reduction personally even tho it is something I feel in the best interests of my chikld, esp if I felt hapy in other aspects, simply bcause it is more awkward for the cm to be doing different meals. I'd see it jsut as an extra to make me happier and provide the best for my child.

I offer food to my minded children as yes it is easier to do mainly the same but why frozen stuff for you child? I only offer fruit and veg sticks, breadsticks and stuff like that for snack and I have 3 aged 5-8 as well as 3 0-5s.

I would provide my own if shes not meeting your wishes and yes I would ask about the price hehe (thats why I do a separate price for lunch (snacks included))

HTH

Or ask for a menu in advance and negociate it with her...you know, well I like lunch but could we have a snack of fruit that day.....it's what I do with my parents esp when they first start

So if lunch and snacks is normally covered in with the price, should I ask for a reduction if I provide my own or is that going too far?

I would provide own food. and insist that she uses it. I do for the dts. It makes me happier, since I knwo what they are eating and it balances with what they are eatign at home.
