HELP!

Right, so I set up my blog with a domain name of partyspanner.com...and signed up to google analytics.

Now I need to add a code?

Anyone have any clue how I do this?

I needed to add some code to each page of my website that I wanted captured on GA. Not sure about a blog though.

Have a look here

I think this is your site here, ShirleyKnot partyspanner.wordpress.com/

(just posting that to check I'm looking at the right thing and not sending you on the wrong track!).

If that's you, you're on Wordpress.com and I don't think you can attach google analytics to that. Wordpress.com has its own stats thing, which is like a more basic analytics thing - it's about third down on the dashboard menu, I think.

YES! Ah right, I understand louvert.

Thank You.

I'm getting hits which I can't track - which is...frustrating. Where are they coming from? Hmm Confused Grin

@suzikettles - Wordpress.org (the link there) is quite different.

I'm useless at explaining this, but Wordpress.com (which Shirley's on) is like blogger - it's all there and you just kind of sign in, set up a blog and use it.

Wordpress.org is for people who've bought some web hosting (not just the domain name) and set up the site on their own hosting. I have that one, although it looks almost exactly the same as the other sort.

I was actually thinking of writing something about this because I think it's a really confusing thing. But I can't come up with the words to explain it!

Now that I have them straight in my head, I can explain it.

.org is a service to create your own blog using your own URL and hosting and, if you want, complete design from scratch. It is 100% customizable. You need to own a domain, have hosting space and some knowledge of Unix and other programming languages. You also get a whole lotta plug-ins and themes, most for free, that you can customize if you want.

.com is a free service with limited functionality that gives you a username.wordpress.com URL pre-installed widgets, themes etc. It is not very customizable and is good for people who just want to blog and aren't concerned about how it looks beyond it looking good.

Clear as mud? Grin

Ah, ok. I understand.

Move over to Blogger...?

No, I guess not. So yes, I suppose you'd need to just go with the more limited stats available and guess about the rogue hits Confused

There used to be a built in Analytics Widget but maybe it's done? I haven't finished doing my .com blog for my cheapo client yet but I'll be investigating further on Monday.

On Wordpress.com (not self-hosted Wordpress):

  • Open up the dashboard.

  • Looking at the menu on the left hand side, click on the actual word 'Dashboard'. A menu will open up below it.

  • You should now see the words (in a list under the word 'Dashboard')
    Home
    Blogsurfer
    My comments
    Readomatic
    Tag surfer
    Site stats
(and some others that aren't relevant here)

  • Click on 'site stats' and you'll be presented with a whole page showing a graph, search terms that have brought people to you, info on which posts / pages people have clicked on etc.

Also, I'm not kidding, the Site Stats on Wordpress.com are so elusive. It's driving me mad. I've had 50 hits today on an older post about invitations...why? WHY?

where are they coming from?

Ah, the power of the lurker.

Louvert posted your url further up the thread. From other forums I've been on where it shows you the number of views your post has had as well as number of replies, there will have been probably a couple of hundred people who looked at your post but couldn't be arsed to respond didn't reply. 40 odd of them must have decided to have a nosey at your blog.

Have you tried googling the url of the invitations post? It might show you if someone's linked to it somewhere else.

It'll be the link posted earlier. I pick up loads of hits when someone links to my blog on MN.

And if I wasn't on holiday, I would be writing more at the moment. Am getting withdrawal Symptoms

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Log in to your word press blog
  2. Click on the Plugins link in the left hand menu
  3. Click on the "Add New" link next to the Plugins title
  4. Search for "Google Analytics for WordPress" in the search box
  5. Click the Install Now link next to the version created by Joost de Valk (thats the one I use anyway).
  6. Now open a next window and load up Google Analytics.
  7. Once you are logged in click "Add Website Profile" then fill in the details of your website.
  8. Copy the code next to your new site in the list and return to your word press blog.
  9. Paste the code into your analytics plugin settings.
  10. Job Done!

If you need any more help please feel free to ask me. I do a lot of work on my partners fancy dress costumes website and a number of blogs so I have a rough idea of what to do in a number of fields.

    Hope that helps :)
