Black Mumsnetters

If you can't canerow...

Morning BMumsnetters

I have a 2 year old daughter and I am rubbish at cane rowing her hair. I try every time to do it neatly and have a watched a ton of YouTube and instagram videos but it always looks messy.

Just wondering if there are any other black mums out there who aren't good at it, what you do with your child's hair to make it look presentable?
Thanks 😊

I used to use this lovely lady for plaits, only stopped as it was too far
www.gumtree.com/p/hairdressing-services/private-afro-hairdresser-hair-braiding-single-plaits-box-braids-knotless-braids-cornrows-etc/1369058687.
She's reasonable and quick and based in Willesden. Good luck !

@IsABajan if you are in NW london would you consider going to west Ealing or Northfields? If yes, happy to share two places with you. They are great for children and adults.

I have taken my nieces to a lovely lady in Kilburn before. Is that anywhere near you? If so I can DM details.

Could you see if there is a mobile hairdresser on the local Facebook group who can help

@VladmirsPoutine I can plait but again it's not fantastic and neat. I have done single plaits on her but she has A LOT of hair so that takes ages and after a while she will start fussing.

Can you plait in general? because much as canerow is the best method, I've also found parting sections of the hair and plaiting it as far as it will go can also help.

Where are you? My hairdresser is mobile so it has worked for us for a few years. You can look for mobile hairdressers near you on Gumtree etc. Or PM me

Hello I am black and have 2 DDs and to
my shame I cannot cane row to save my life.

The lady who does my hair does my girls’ hair and i am happy to hand over the money.

I remembered the name of the book I had which helped me with styles when my girls were younger. It was Kinki Creations by Jena Renee Williams. You can buy it for under £5.

@blockpavingismynightmare hahaha she is quite good. If I give her some rice cakes and put Bing on she will sit and let me do her hair.

I just wish it looked nice when I was done and not like she's gone through a bush backwards!

Hi OP. I'm not black, but I just wanted to say I don't know how for the life of me I could get a two year old to sit ! I expect it will come with an awful lot of practice. Good luck !

Hi @Choconuttolata
Thanks for your answer.
I did start when she was much younger and she sits still quite well if I give her my phone but I'm just thinking I've been doing it for a while yet it still doesn't look neat. I can't even part straight! 🤦🏽‍♀️
I'll keep trying though

I am not black but have mixed heritage kids so taught myself using YouTube. It is hard to start by learning on a 2 year old as they don't sit still very long. I practiced on my older nieces and on a doll toy and just did twists in my kids hair when they were that little until I got more confident. You can even twist their hair when they are sleeping which makes it easier. The more you practice the neater and tighter the plaits will become.
