Baby Name Regret

We announced our baby boys name, Ellis, and I am filled with uncertainty about it. It could be my postpartum hormones / baby blues, but I am panicking that it’s not a good name for a baby boy. I had always thought of Ellis as a boys name (based in UK), but I’m now worried it’s more of a girls name. Appreciate others views and hopefully some reassurance that my son won’t grow up hating his name!

My friend has a son called Ellis I've only ever heard it for a boy. It's a lovely name

It's a nice name, and one that I truly think of as appropriate for a boy or a girl.

I have known 3 people called Ellis. 2 were girls. I am in the UK. The 2 women lived in the UK but were not born here.

However, it’s a unisex name. If you like it. You like it. There’s a chance that your kids won’t like their name, no matter what you name them. My brother has a very traditional male name and hates it. My adult daughter was thinking of changing her name at one point. Now she quite likes it.

Can you check how popular it has been in the recent few years? I think it had a surge for girls a few years ago due to Grey’s Anatomy. But I don’t think it will be now.

I didn't even know it was unisex! It's just a boy's name to me.
It sounds fine, don't worry.

I love the name Ellis - it’s definitely a boys name (as far as I am aware) and I’ve only ever known it used for boys. It’s a great choice - well known but not overused and not dated or too trendy.

I would always assume it to be a boy’s name, and I really, really like it.

Congratulations on your gorgeous boy x

Yes I’d not heard of the greys anatomy characters but I think you’re right. I did look up the ONS stats and in the Uk it doesn’t feature in the top 100 girls names but does in boys.
Thank you - I do agree im never going to know if he’ll like his name in future!

Boys name. Anyone can grow up to hate their name, although you’d hope they wouldn’t! I like it!

I only know it as a boy's name. If you like it, keep it. Unisex names are fine anyway.

Ellis is great. Sounds modern and traditional. I’d think of it as a boys name but most boys names have been picked up by girls these days.

Boy's name in my mind.
I find it unusual and a bit artsy and cool; all in a good way.

I think it is really a lovely, sweet and not overused name ❤️

I have known people to announce names and change so if it really doesn't feel right, then don't worry about people's reaction in you changing it. They will soon forget!

I think of it only as a boy's name. I like it a lot. One of the nicest colleagues I ever worked with was called Ellis.

Well, there you go.

However, if you are having real doubts, you can still very easily change your mind up until you register him
