Baby names

Would it be weird...

To give both twin babies the same middle name? After a family member of that makes any difference.

Eg. First name - same name - surname

Or

First name - different middle same - same middle name - surname

My DD has 3 given names and loves it and has given her DD 3 names too. Forms usually have plenty of room unless all names are extraordinarily long. I think the second option sounds fine.
Good luck

All the children in our family have two middle names and love it. It's not a hassle at all - occasionally they can't use their second middle name but that's not an issue. They all say they would like to give their children two middle names.
So I would go for your second option.
But I wouldn't call a child by their father's name which always strikes me as very odd.

@MumOfThreeToBe2021

I love the family where they're all called Jude too!!

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough! Because

Chosen first name - DH name - surname creates bad initials (ASS).

FIL - DH - surname is fine initials wise, but means 1 baby having both family names, and the other not having any

Ah right! Yeah ASS is not great at all!

To be honest, I’d ditch naming them after their father. Seeing as you’re already using FIL’s name and (making assumptions here) their father’s surname, why give them his first name too?

I wouldn't do it. I also think 2 middle names is too much. You will never use all 3 names.

My boys are each
Chosen name-middle name (family member first name-my last name-DH last name.

So they have two middle names (the second one being my last name, rather than giving them a double barrelled last name) and their first middle name gives them a reference to someone close to us in our family (and an alternative first name for them to use as an adult if they hate the chosen name!).

They only go by first name-last name at school but everyone was happy with the two middle names solution.

I just, having twins, couldn't imagine having one that had FILs first name then DHs first name and the other having a random name then DHs.

So if DH is Steven and FIL is Robin I'd have to have Mary Stevie and Anne Robyn not Robyn Stevie and Mary Stevie

SleepingStandingUp · 30/03/2021 22:03

So why can't you have second chosen name , DH name? Or do both girls have the same first initial? That'll be a nightmare for post etc.

I think it's like
Robyn Rae Smith (dad, grandad, surname) and then theyve chosen Aria Jade Smith so Aria Rae Smith wouldn't work?

I'd give them different chosen names and then family names as the middle names. I think naming one DHs first name and then family name and one random name and then familyy name is still weird. Or ditch naming one after Dad.

I can't split the names as it creates initials for one I wouldn't give to a child...!! The middle name we're considering is their dad's name, but 1 of the twins is already definitely being named after my father in law. So to be clear, if one twin only took their dad's name as a middle name, they would be FIL name - dad name - surname, whereas the other would just be chosen name - chosen name - surname.
Not that I think it matters, because I think it’s fine to share a middle name (love the PP whose family all has Jude as a middle!) but why couldn’t the other baby have it? The one who isn’t having FIL’s first name? I’m not getting that bit.

Ooh a mixture of opinions, all much appreciated as I'm still undecided myself. Swinging more towards don't-do-it!!

I do think the being twins adds an extra dimension of weirdness. Twins needing to feel like individuals as a few posters have mentioned is a good point and something I hadn't considered.

Also still agog at A, B , C, D quads!!

Would they mind (either of them!) having 2 or none?!

I'd go with the second option. Both of my children have the same middle name (my maiden name) but they also have another middle name before that.

So there's two family names?

Why can't they have one each as middle names?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/03/2021 13:43

Quite a few siblings in the birth announcements seem to have a repeated middle name (generally option 2 of your list - with 1 different middle name too); so it seems completely normal to me - I've always assumed it must be a family name being used rather than the parents being unimaginative! And much nicer for both children to have the family link imo, rather than just the one.

I like the idea of the same middle name, and either option works depending on how long you want their names to be.

RuthW · 30/03/2021 12:25

Either are fine.

@RedSauceSpaghetti, my thoughts too. That's why I said
Would you use the same middle name if the babies weren't twins?

I know two sisters with the same middle name, named after their father's mother. It's not a typical middle name, so it seems a bit strange, but they hardly ever use their middle names. Their first names are quite different.

A, B, C, and D is a bit mean.

My quadruplet husband shares one of two middle names with the rest of the quads. He hates it but it meant a lot to his dad (not helped that their first initials are A, B, C, D in order of birth) I would go with the two middle names option so long as their first names are suitably different. I have twins myself so I know how important it is for them them feel like individuals.

Report
MerryChristmasToYou · 30/03/2021 09:52

Same one middle name. It would be better to think of a different middle name though.

It depends a bit on the middle name. If it is a surname type name, fine.

Would you use the same middle name if the babies weren't twins?

Tambourina · 29/03/2021 21:59

It's fine.

I prefer the 2nd option.

I know twins with the same middle name, they also have the same first initial. I can't see the problem with the same middle name.

It's weird.
Nor would I land 2 middle names on a child - or, on you as you will be the one filling in forms for them for the first 18 years, and obviously two at a time for all things at the same time.

If it is important you you to copy someone else's name, then can't you do as BeingATwat suggests and also use someone else's name for your other dc ?
