Our Twins will be born today and we have struggled with names throughout the pregnancy.

Looks like we are going for

Rufus James

And

Jaxon William

(The middle names are grandparents)

What do people think?

I really don’t think you should have posted if you had already decided.

Jaxon is really not great, but even worse by you giving his brother a lovely classic name.

Jaxon will face a stigma of people making negative assumptions about him based on his name. People will guess his age and his class background. Rufus will get better opportunities just from the name at the top of the CV than his brother will.

And to make it clear, the undercurrent here is obviously that Jaxon is 'not nice' 'common' and the other dreaded C-word. Which is a bit of a shitty way to think and no one should judge on a name.

However, with names what that actually translates as almost all the time is that the names which are seen as 'downmarket' also tend to be ones which are:

  • modern, - 'made up' - new names
  • ones which are spelled randomly, with no rules and no accepted spelling

-ones which become popular very quickly, usually used by celebrities, then fall out of fashion just as quickly and then are sneered at as being 'naff'.

All of those things do matter with names because it means that the name doesn't stand the test of time. In ten years time Rufus and Jaxon will be the equivalent of a Thomas and Wayne, or a Charlotte and Sharon - one name that doesn't date you, pigeonhole you, or has ended up being a shorthand for a particular era or feel or even a kind of 'joke' name and the other - exactly the opposite.

@Mommabear20

Why do people feel that their kids names have to be similar?
Tbh as they're twins, I love that they're different! They'll spend their lives being compared and having similar names would only add to that.

Jaxson was a strong contender for us if we'd had a boy

But Mommabear that's exactly why there's been such a strong reaction on here really.

Yes they will spend their lives being compared. So to give one baby a classic, traditional-yet-also-unusual really interesting nice name which most people (even if they don't like it for themselves) can't really slag it off... and the other a name which is seen as made-up, badly spelled, not classic, and to be blunt pretty downmarket and unattractive - ?

They will indeed spend their lives being compared and one with a really great name and one with a frankly awful one will indeed add to that!

Look at the responses. It's not just one or two picky people.

If it were a single baby I really think OP would have got much more muted responses because folk are feeling pretty sorry for the poor baby who draws the short straw.

I don't think names have to match, but by complimenting Rufus and saying that Jaxon is the opposite, it is a polite way of saying I'm not fond of Jaxon. Hope that clarifies a bit. Since op asked for opinions. But if it doesn't matter to her then great. Not my kids are they Smile?

Forgot to say I love both! Good luck!

LOVE Rufus and the middle names, not keen on Jaxon at all I’m afraid!

Rufus James is lovely. But it doesn't work with Jaxon which is very different in style. Rufus, James and William all very classic. Jaxon very modern and has the potential to date badly.

How about Jacob William?

I do love the name Rufus.

They really don’t go well together! Jaxon is the. new Jayden. I’d definitely rethink that one, especially with that spelling.

Even predictive text doesn't like it and has suggested Jacob.....Jaxon!

Nearly unanimous on here and I too agree. Jacob very different feel to Rufus. I would have gone with Felix or Jasper, a much better fit with Rufus. However, you've made your choices. Hope you are well!

Aww, congratulations OP. Are you SURE about Jaxon though? It's not a classy one. Just saying. You'll find out in primary school.

I really like Rufus!
I'd have chose Rufus and Jacob.
Or something like Rufus and Cosmo.
Really dislike Jaxon.

Strong no from me re Jaxon. Sorry.

Jackson is nice, if that's an option. IF that's an option. I know you said you're set on names, but wasn't sure if spelling was open to suggestions! If so then Jackson is really nice. I like that you can shorten to Jack, Jax OR Sonny. Whereas with Jaxon, it only really lends itself to being shortened to Jax. But maybe you prefer that. Congrats again! Wonder if you've had them yet! V exciting.

Rufus doesn't really suit my taste, but it's fine. I know a little Rufus and he's lovely. As 'R' names go, I prefer Reuben, Rowan and Rory.

Jaxon - I think Jackson is a much nicer spelling. Or just go with Jack, which I think sounds nicer with Rufus.

Congratulations. Hope things go well today!

I think it's better to have names that are completely different styles than really matchy or rhyming names.

That said, since you want opinions I'm afraid I'm also not a fan of Jaxon. I don't normally like surnames as first names and I don't like deviations from the original spellings.

Jasper? John? Felix?

Mum of twins here. Why should twin's names have to go together?

Personally I like your choices. Congratulations on your new arrivals.
