Baby carrier sold with small stains

wishuponastar99 · 23/09/2022 14:02

I recently sold a baby carrier on Facebook marketplace.

It was £75 brand new, I advertised it for £50 and sold it for £40 plus postage. It was advertised as 'excellent condition'

The buyer has messaged me to say that she is happy with the carrier overall but has found a few stains on it and wondered if I knew what they were.

I hadn't noticed them before I sent the item so firstly I know I am BU to not have checked it more closely before I sent it.

I have messaged back apologising, I have suggested they must just be small mud marks and asked her to let me know if they don't wash out.

Attached the photos she sent me of the marks

My question is - if they don't wash out, what do you think would be a reasonable solution? I'm thinking offer a partial refund but unsure how much.

This is why I can't be bothered selling high ticket items. I once sold a designer bag on eBay that cost £250 new for £15. It had been used but was in great condition still. The buyer messaged me to tell me that there was a tiny scratch on the bottom. She literally got a £250 bag for £15 and was still looking for money back. Some people have no shame.

How do you know the marks were there when you sold it to her? She sounds like a chancer, don't offer her anything

Or ask her what her ideal resolution is. Bet she just wants extra money off which seems ridiculous for a reasonably priced second hand carrier. If you offer her to return it I think she will rethink because she will k ow shes hard pushed to find another in that condition.

You didn't say it was new and unused. It's still excellent condition. Do nothing.

I'd ask her to send it back, at her expense so she can choose her postage option and confirm that I'll offer a full refund upon receipt.

As PPs have said I can barely see any stains, I don't think you need to refund, and it still meets the criterion of 'excellent condition'

God, why would you even message? You'd just wipe it first, surely?

I seriously can't even see a stain in the first picture and the second one is barely there! You sold a used product not new. I wouldn't be offering anything.

Ffs how did she even notice that! Barely a stain!

See if she comes back to you after washing it. I would probably knock of £5 just to keep her happy but she is being mega fussy.

I would offer £10.

I wouldn’t have even said anything if it was me because those marks are tiny!

But if she insists, knock £10 off or offer a full refund with the sling being returned

Meh, they are nothing. At a push id offer £10 as a gesture of goodwill but it doesn't affect use of the item and it's barely noticeable. If it were me I'd still consider myself to have gotten a bargain.

I can't even see the mark in the first picture. I think I'd knock £5-10 off, given that she already got it for £10 less than you originally advertised it for.

leave her to it.
she's got the carrier she wanted at a decent price.
if she doesn't like it, she can return it and you can sell it again.

This is why I could never get involved with selling stuff second hand. If those stains are really as insignificant as they look in the picture I would still consider that to be excellent (as opposed to ‘like new’) condition. They’re tiny! If she wanted an immaculate baby carrier she should have forked out the extra £35 and bought herself a new one 🙄

I’d tell her if she doesn’t want it then that’s absolutely fine, send it back and you’ll return her money.

I’d offer her £10 back or a refund and return the carrier, then it’s her choice

Christ, you should never sell anything unwashed on the expectation the buyer will wash it.

Considering you sent an unwashed, stained baby carrier while saying it was in excellent condition then as the buyer I would be going for a full refund.

I think the problem you have is you have said its brand new, but yet its got mud marks on it. It could have only have had mud marks on it, if its been used?

I never said brand new, I said excellent condition (used)

Sorry, just saw it was £40 plus postage. So £45ish? I’d offer £10 refund.

This explains why I always see people selling dirty stuff saying it just needs a wash, so just wash it then? I expect people will wash it again when received but selling stained dirty clothes is really odd

No as it had literally been used once or twice, and I would expect people to wash items on receiving them (I know as a buyer I would always rather know I have washed them thoroughly myself)

I would always wash something before sending and then I wash again anything I receive myself, can’t believe people send things unwashed 😣

I would offer £15 refund, so she has paid £35. If she’s not happy with that, I’d refund her completely and take the sling back.

Partial or full refund. It wasn’t in excellent condition.

My question is how much refund do people think would be appropriate? Obviously I already recognise that some refund is due
