Patent Doc Martens. Actually just shit?

I bought patent doc boots about six months ago. They were agony to start and I could only wear them for 10 minutes at a time. Now they finally don’t hurt, but they squeak and creak when I walk. Really loudly. They also feel I’m clomping about with concrete blocks on my feet.

Why are they not comfortable?

How do I stop the bloody things squeaking?

Patent is really difficult to break in because the coating means there is no stretch. With other Docs the best way to break them in is to warm the leather with a hairdryer to soften it up.

As PP have said Solovair are better as they are UK made and better quality but they still need quite assertive breaking-in.

My daughter has some (v expensive joint birthday & Xmas present). She’s never managed to wear them in and can’t walk anywhere for more than 15 minutes without them wounding her. They are not fit for purpose. Total waste of money. So yes, utter shite.

Seems like the answer to my original question is yes, they are just actually shit. That was an expensive mistake!

@MalingeringMary as well as Solivair, this is also a Uk company making gorgeous, quality footwear. Pricey but there is also an outlet tab on the website.

DMs are just fast fashion with a hefty price now. Now made in Taiwan and with cheap materials.

The quality is no longer there. I wish I’d held on to some of my older pairs.

The moment they start to enter the comfy slipper phase is when the patent starts cracking which you can't really do anything about like normal leather.

Any good alternatives? I'd love some but my last DMs made me cry so I sold them.

I'll never forget the pain!

Solovair, as linked above. Fully UK made, comfy pretty much straight away, brilliant customer service.

It's time to put them to bed. They are ugly & dated. To me they scream 'look at me I was really something in the 80's' (90% weren't they just wish they were)

Some people are so judgemental

My DD aged 15 has a pair she's had for nearly a year now, and they still try to "eat her feet" (her words, not mine!) each time she wears them. Not patent, so no squeaking (thank goodness!), but as a PP said, she can only wear them for short bursts and certainly not if she has to walk more than a mile or so. Such a disappointment for her, they cost an absolute fortune as well! She has tried the stuff you rub on them to soften them up and wearing 2 pairs of socks, but still no good - if anyone has any alternative suggestions, I would be very happy to be able to pass them on, thanks!

I love my patent doc boots! They are so comfy and yeah they did squeak to
begin with but now they are fully
broken in they don’t make a sound. Didn’t do anything special other than keep wearing them.

I had some patent docs that I sold on ebay for this reason!

Most Doc Martens are no longer made in the UK and in effect are a ‘cheaper made’ alternative using the brand name.

The UK company who made the original Doc Martens still make similar, of quality, in the UK ( Solvair)

Mine are comfy and don’t squeak but… that means I wear them a lot and the patent stuff has started peeling where the leather has creased from walking. So for a different reason I still agree - crap. 😤

I had some clumpy shoes (not doc martens) that squeaked and I, bizarrely, used WD40 and it helped a bit but didn't entirely cure it.

I have a new brand new pair in my cupboard. I could’ve cried when I started wearing them. I thought my they were going to be the best boots I’d ever bought and such an investment. Nope just shit.

apparently there is some stuff you can run in to soften them but tbh I don’t want to ruin them in case I sell them in

DD's are croc effect rather than patent but they do squeak if they get too wet. She puts a bit of dubbin round the stitching at the bottom and that fixes it instantly.

Someone suggested putting baby powder between the tongue and the outer would solve it. It did not, but at least they now smell delicious.

Watching with interest as I have the same issue. Have avoided wearing them as the creaking is just embarrassing 😂
