AIBU?

Where the fuck do we put the mouse?

At least I hope it is and not a rat..

Got some humane traps in, going to put them down today. What do we do with the fucker if/when we catch him? Drop him off at the old asshole neighbours house? Where on earth do we take him?

If it's a mouse I don't want it dead but if it's a rat, surely we can't release him somewhere? Or can we? I mean, they're diseased pests, right? Husband says drown it if it's a rat but I don't know if I can do that.

This is what I dreaded moving to the countryside. Fucking hell.

We live in the countryside, people use them here.

But not you. Wink

@GiveMeTheShivers

Most people would just use the regular traps that kill, for rats and mice alike.

We live in the countryside, no one uses them. They’re part of living here.

You're vegan, I hope.

I am. Smile

@Scrowy

Sorry just seen your updates.

They absolutely can get up the step. But as long as they can't get into the house from the garage then you probably just need to woman up a bit.

Well, it would be able to when I go in the garage wouldn't it. I enter, he scales the wall (to him anyway, step to me) gets into the utility then takes a beeline for the kitchen and all hell breaks loose.

@CallmeHendricks

If you catch something, regardless of it being a mouse or a rat, you need to drive somewhere a distance away and release it. If you put it out into your garden, or even close-ish to home, they just come straight back in.

If its a house mouse its not going to survive in the wider countryside so do yourself a favour and just kil it in the first place. If its a field mouse it's probably coming in to feed but living in an outbuilding or outside so just block up the gaps its using to get in and put it in the garden.

A cat will not necessarily help. Ours bring them in and set them free!!Hmm
If I can get to them quickly enough I catch them in a tupperware pot or in my hands, and put out in the garden,but one took up residence for weeks but never came out when we were around.

We tried the humane traps for weeks but the only thing that worked (sorry) was poison.

Mice can get anywhere. Put poison in your garage. The little bastards can be extremely destructive to building fabric and they breed like, well mice.

Husband says drown it if it's a rat but I don't know if I can do that.

Vile.

Just take it a couple of miles from your house, somewhere rural, woods or something and release it.

I’m sure the psychopaths will be on to agree with drowning it.

No such thing as humane traps.

Even if they don't get hypothermic or go into shock in them you either have to take them away to release them away from their familiar environment where they will die, or release them nearby where they will get back in.

If you are seeing mouse or rat droppings in the house you need snap traps or other terminal methods.

Make sure you put everything like bread/cereals/biscuits etc into plastic or metal tubs don't allow food out of the kitchen to minimise risk of crumbs elsewhere in the house and just try and keep as clean and tidy as possible.

They come in at this time of year looking for food and warmth. Once you have dealt with what's already in mesh up common access points such as washing machine/dryer outlets.

Or just get a couple of cats.

We took our humanely caught mouse for a country drive! 6 miles away and released him into woodland. But, because it was dark I insisted on checking where DH reversed the car to make sure he didn't squish our road trip mate Grin

I would fucking love a cat but as well as killing the pest he will also kill the husband. It's my biggest sorrow in life, but he's worth it. Most of the time.

The mouse/rat has not entered the actual house. I should have said. It's only in the garage which has a door to the utility which has a door to the kitchen ofc, but it's a pretty big step to get into the utility so I don't think he can get up.. however, I need access to the garage and I can't go in there because it ends up in screaming, tears and running away.

I am very clearly not cut out to live here.

Far, far-away. They can come back from a remarkable distance away.
Tbh there seems to be some debate about just how humane a humane trap is as they’re likely to die wherever you leave them.
I gave a bit of nuts to the one I let you. And to be fair I think we caught 2 and let them go & we’ve never had evidence of more.
I also went round & tried to close obvious gaps & threw peppermint oil everywhere. And sometimes moved things about as apparently they are neophobes!

They don't work. You re going to need the snap traps.

It's hideous but you can't have them in your kitchen.
