AIBU?

To want some games to play with the kids on holiday?

Not really a aibu but this gets the most traffic.

We go to Cornwall every year & we take a pack of cards & dobble with us when we’re eating out or popping some where for a drink, to fill the time while we’re waiting for the food to come.

Just wondering if anyone had any other games we could take instead. We’ve two 12, almost 13 year old girls, so something that they will enjoy. Also, something that is portable, bonus points if it can be played in the car too.

Uno and dominoes work well

Exploding kittens is a big hit here, also why am I weird which would be easy to play in the car (like a kids version of cards against humanity)

Monopoly deal...the game where you throw the pigs!

Guess who, connect 4, travel size snakes and ladders.

We used to take travel sized Guess Who and Connect 4.

Oldies but goodies.

Sussed is fun, card game where you guess what answers others will give to random questions.

Pit is good fun and very portable. Can get noisy though.

A bit old school, but pen and paper means you can do hangman, noughts and crosses and consequences (I think that’s what it’s called, where you draw a head and fold the paper and the next person draws the body etc). With a pack of cards though, I bet you could find games you’ve not played before: old maid, whist, there’s lots of options with a pack of cards

Another vote for exploding kittens. By far our favourite. Monopoly deal good too.
Maybe Top Trumps.

Oooh Consequences is my favourite pen and paper game but I've never heard of it played that way.

The way we play it is everyone writes:

Woman's name (then folds the paper over to hide it and everyone swaps paper).

Man's name (swaps again)

Where they met (swaps)

What she said (swaps)

What he said (swaps)

What happened in the end - ie the consequence (swaps)

Then when you read out the mixed up conversations etc it can be hilarious.

Boy, girl
Keeps us entertained for ages and if you don’t have pen and paper or are driving you can just shout your answers out.
We do
Boy, girl, place, animal, film, colour
You can use your phone to search for the letter or do it old school where one person says the alphabet and another tells them when to stop and you all take turns.

Another favourite is black jack.

Pass the Pigs and Exploding Kittens are both very portable and playable. Bananagrams is a great game but takes up a lot of table space, so not ideal whilst you're out.

Surely at 12 and 13 they don't need games to occupy them whilst you're waiting for food though? Can't you chat to each other? We haven't needed games to occupy the kids in restaurants since they were about 7/8.

My ds got a game called Muffin Time for his 14th birthday, it’s very funny and perfect for teenagers.

Rumikub is great. Also a pack of cards… we start off with “follow the jack” & sevens when the kids are little and then move onto knock out whist, niggly, whist, hearts, loads of different enjoyable games with a lack of cards. Also another small travel game involving dice… can’t remember the name of it! Will try and remember to check what’s it’s call in the morning.

Yes, we do have conversations but always good to have a back up plan that isn’t an iPhone 😜

My favourite game with pen and paper, you pick 5 categories (could be anything eg famous person, country, animal, city, plant=fruit/veg, songs, river, things in a house etc). One person goes silently through the alphabet until another person says "stop". Whatever letter they were on is the letter you now all need to find words for for each category. Each unique word gets you 2 points, each word you share with another person for the same category gets you 1 point and 0 points if you couldn't think of an answer. We time the rounds because otherwise the little ones take forever.

Fluxx - it’s a card game and there are loads of different versions (Sci-Fi Fluxx, Monty Python Fluxx, Eco Flux etc etc)
