To think sleeping like this is strange?

I'm up late working on a presentation. I'm sat in bed with my laptop. Husband fast asleep next to me.... head completely covered with the blanket. Nose smooshed into pillow. He sleeps on his stomach and often times lays down completely face first into the pillow. He looks dead.

I just do not understand a) how this can be comfortable and b) how he does not suffocate by the morning

I'm so baffled that he does this, and the thought of me having to sleep like that makes my skin crawl. I want to take the covers off him myself just to ease my anxiety lol

I sleep like a vampire apparently. I know I like to cuddle myself so sleep cross armed and I don't move or make much noise. Must be alarming when I'm asleep on my back with crossed arms.

On the other hand my dp is a fidget monster, moving his legs, arms about. He does have sleep apnea and now sleeps with a machine, makes a hum but much better than his snoring.

But seriously if he does hold his breath when asleep please get it checked out, especially if tired in daytime or overweight. The holding his breath means his brain is always alert so not getting a full deep sleep. Sleep apnea can cause serious issues.

My partner sleeps with his knees up, essentially making a tent with the duvet, sometimes one leg is elevated and resting on his other knee, I don't know how he can sleep like that, it drives me mad and I regularly have to swoop a foot under his ankles so his legs drop down.
He also sometimes sleeps with a pillow and the duvet over his face and I wonder how on earth he can breathe, I start hyperventilating if my head is under the duvet for even a few seconds.

I sleep face down into the pillow and heavy duvet right over my head!
If he has sleep apnea though he really needs to get a sleep assessment.

I think it's more weird that you'd take the laptop to bed and work!

I also do the ballerina leg thing

@Stichintime

My husband sleeps flat on his back with a tiny pillow and stays like a plank all night. I often think he's not in the bed next to me he's that still.

I would love that, your so lucky

I wouldn’t. He sounds like a vampire. 😳

@motherrunner my youngest DS sleeps the same way.

I have to have one of my hands touching my face to sleep so I sleep on my side with one hand, palm up, tucked under my face. I have to flip my pillow because I can't sleep on the same side of it that I slept on the night before and I have one foot hooked up on top of the duvet with the rest of me under it.

This is mine, but he does this really weird ballerina pose with his right leg. I know hes definitely there though as he snores like a beast.

Not DH, but DS sleeps way under the blanket. Not just slightly covered up, I mean fully, in the middle of the bed so you can’t even see him bar a little bump. I often wonder how he breathes but he still rises each morning! (The odd thing is he won’t sleep without the landing light on, door open but then hides himself away?)

It's a bit like not dangling my exposed feet at the foot of the bed in case the monster under the bed grabs them

This is just common sense and good survival instincts. Were a monster, spider or mass murderer to wish to attack me, my duvet will save me!

This would make me worried about sleep apnoea. Is he tired during the day? Does he snore? Is he overweight?

Mine lays flat on his back with his duvet pulled right up over his head, but kind of wrapped round it so his nose is poking out.
He looked like a bloody parrot dressed in a puffa coat!

Most of the time, I sleep on my side with the duvet covering my face and most of my head.

I feel too exposed otherwise. It's a bit like not dangling my exposed feet at the foot of the bed in case the monster under the bed grabs them. 😉

@WineGetsMeThroughIt 🤣🤣 must be comfy if he stays like that 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 don’t think I’ll be trying it though!

My DH sleeps on his side, legs and arms wrapped round the duvet and a pillow like a koala hugging a tree, with his head tipped RIGHT back so he’s literally facing the headboard 😐 weirdo! I honestly didn’t even know it was possible to tip your head back that far until I saw him sleep 🤣🤣

@1forAll74

I am an oldie, and sleep alone, and always sleep on my back..I sometimes used to sleep on my side years ago, but then would get a crease down my face, that stayed there for about half the day next day. I then decided, that this may cause wrinkles in the long run, so always sleep on my back now. I am78 now and have no wrinkles on my face at all.

I also have three cats, who usually all sleep in a row at the end of my bed on a fleece blanket. But some times, one or all of them will move positions in the night, and I will subconsciously move my legs to fit them in somewhere between the cats, and end up with bent legs, and horrible cramps in the night.

But how do you know that you sleep on your back the whole time - as we all shift about in our sleep?

Full marks for the cat manoeuvres, mine gets the hump if I move a millimetre 🤣

@TaraR2020 if she thinks it's sleep apnea it might not be working for him though. It's funny if he's just a sound sleeper which a lot of people are and do sleep in random positions. But if she think he stops breathing regularly or could be serious.

This made me giggle, I'm sorry op - I'm blaming insomnia!

I couldn't sleep like that but it's clearly working for him!

Re possible sleep apnoea...How's his health generally: Weight? Is he tired during the day? Etc

Can't swap him sorry, there's only room for one 'active sleeper' in the bed and that's me!

[quote Asherline]@WineGetsMeThroughIt if you think he could have sleep apnea he won't understand because he's asleep. Like know one knows of they snore or not unless someone tells them. You need to take Charge and get tests or help if you think it's a problem. He could stopping breathing regularly and would cause issues.
Have you tried anything like a fit bit or any monitor. I'd be interested to see because I have phases of sleep apnea and has a period of getting bad, then improves so I don't do anything about it xx

I've tried to take video / recordings of it and have played it for him. But he is honestly so bloody stubborn and thinks he's invincible. He says it's nothing to be worried about and thinks I'm overreacting. I need to monitor it more closely again and perhaps turn the lights on to get a proper video

Yeah, I’d find that weird! I have to have something at least partially over me. If it’s hot, I like sleeping whilst cuddling the duvet so it’s not really over me. Absolutely nothing can be over my face or I feel like I’m suffocating.
