AIBU re Skip Hire

Ordered a skip to be delivered today, til the end of the week. Have taken the week off work so I can get some stuff cleared out I got the skip.

Except the skip has not arrived yet. Delivery is ‘anytime on the date specified, between 8am and 4pm’.

Fine, except I’ve PAID to have the for 4 days. And if it doesn’t turn up til 4pm then I won’t have had it for 4 days, I’ll have had it for 3. Execept they can also pick it up at anytime on the last day so if they collect it at 8am I’ll have only had it for 2!

I know this is standard practice for skip hire, so I am probably BU to be annoyed about it.

Just annoyed that I’ve lost the best part of a day of DIY work so far now waiting for this skip.

If it doesn’t arrive until after 3, WIBU to ask for this days hire to be removed from the bill?

It's cheaper to use an independent rubbish collector if you've got it all together to get rid of.
Find a licensed carrier and they'll take it away when you book it

I always go with local firms. I find they bring them before 9 and as soon as it’s full, I give them a call and they come to get it.

I know it’s in the t and cs but I can see why you’re frustrated.

how much was it? we used a rubbish collection company when clearing mil's house, it cost about £400 for a full lorry load and was easier than using a skip.

I think I will use someone else next time, where they don’t set a pickup time. Then I probably won’t care so much what time it’s dropped off!

With this firm, we said when we wanted it delivered and had to say how long we wanted it for. When the order was confirmed it stated the drop off date and the collection date.

Seems a bit shit. We have always just phoned them when its ready to go. Ordered one to clear my sisters house out. Then me and my brother both got Covid so had to isolate, so couldnt do it. It was there about 2 weeks

The last time we hired a skip (first lockdown) he dropped it off late afternoon, but we just rang him when we were ready for pick up. We weren’t given a specific timeframe.

I hire skips often for work and for my home, have done for years and have never paid for how many days I have them. I pay for the size of the skip. Never heard paying by the day? Are you sure that’s correct? If so then I would be going with somebody else as that’s not how it usually works.

Also I never give a time of how long I have it. I get the skips delivered on a certain date when I have finished I give them a call and they collect within the next few days when they have a slot free.

Max hire period is 1 week booking online. If you want it longer you have to call to discuss. I guess if it’s being hired by ‘trade’ they are more flexible.

I know I agreed to the t&cs that says ‘delivery and collection can be at any time on the stated day’ but it’s still annoying and taking the piss a bit IMO.

Oh and this firm ALWAYS collect on the day they say, so we won’t get get it any longer than the period we’ve hired it.

You don't pay for skips by time, you pay for them by size, I have never been charged for the time I have it and I have had quite a few over the years from several companies. (I mean a good few thousand skips, not one or two). I'd double check. And yes, no matter how good a customer you are they will never give a set time, only a day, I do sometimes get it down to the morning or afternoon ;)

Are you sure you're paying a per day fee? Usually skips aren't charged per day unless they have been on site for several weeks, and then there can be a rental charge in place. Usually it's a one off fee for delivery, collection and disposal of waste. (I used to work for a skip company)

You don’t usually pay for x days, you really pay for the collection.

It’s normal that if you need it to be there early you book it the day before (unless you are somewhere it’ll get filled up overnight!) and then you ring when you’re done.

They might book in a collection time but it shouldn’t normally be a problem to push it back a day or two.

That's strange, you don't usually have a set time for a skip, just call them when you've finished with it and they come and collect. I have never had a skip collected on the day I've called them, it's usually at least a day or two before they come and get it.

Last time I hired a skip, I just paid a flat fee for the size I required and they said to ring when it was full and they'd collect it.
All the houses round here that have been having work done in the last couple of years seem to have their skips delivered (noisily) at crack of dawn!

You’ve got to be really specific with them about a time. We hired a skip recently and we’re given a similarly wide window and I pinned them down.

Chances are they won't pick it up at 8am on the last day! They may not pick it up on the last day at all - whenever I've hired, it's been a day or two later at their convenience (I wasn't complaining!).

Presumably you agreed to the 'delivery and collection between 8 and 4' terms. The time to query them was when you booked it, not on the day it's due.

Don't you have other things you can be getting on with until the skip arrives? You knew it might not come until 4, so no point planning to be ready to fill it at 8 am.

Most people will fill a skip in far less than 3/4 days and many people don't want them outside their house for too long anyway, so you're not really paying for access to the skip for set number of days, more the space and having the rubbish taken away.

OP hired it on the understanding that she had it for 4 days, taking it away and disposing of the waste shouldn't encroach on the hire period

I was considering hiring a skip weekend before last but I saw I would of had the same issue and I need help getting a bloody big wardrobe downstairs and it to it but the only time I could get help was early in the morning of the day I was going to book it so would of been sat round twiddling out thumbs waiting for it and then (potentially) it would of been sat there devoid of a wardrobe until I could get help
So I am getting the council to take it away next week along with some other stuff .

YANBU but what did they say when you called them to query it?

If they're anything like the skip companies I've read about on here, they'll not bother turning up to take it on the specified day anyway. Apparently storing their skips at a customer's property so they don't need to deal with it until they're ready is quite common.

In your case I would be breaking the hiring costs down and refusing to pay a penny more than the time you hired.
