If you can bring yourself to live without a brush and clean the toilet by hand, please accept my congratulations. For the rest of you who, like me, have to live with the necessary evil of a toilet brush, trap the handle between the ring and bowl after use so the brush can dry before going back in the holder. Voila no more toilet brush soup.

I have to say, I'm a bit "funny" about loo brushes, and "have" to replace them at least once a year.
I don't know what it is, really. They just gross me out.

After using my toilet brush , it's usually clean looking,but I sometimes wash it out in soapy water,in the sink and let it dry, before going in the brush holder. There is only me here,so I don't have a lot of people to mess up my toilet brush !

If you wash your hands after cleaning the toilet, you need never buy a toilet brush again.

I use the loo brush to do a quick clean but not a full clean of the toilet, will do the same if I was at a friends house/work/out and there was marks in the loo and a brush available. Wouldn't do a full clean of the toilet in any of these cases. Doesn't mean I don't clean the loo just keep it surface clean most of the time.

I bought a silicon brush and it is so much easier at not clogging up

NB...John Lewis are selling replacement silicon brush heads thast do not fit standard toilet brushes. I bought three and they refunded me without asking for them back

Bit annoying they still have them on their website and I had a surreal 'chat' conversation online about sticks that would fit

You could instead put some dry toilet paper in the toilet and dab the toilet brush onto it so that it doesn’t drip on its way back to the holder.

you dont have to hold it at the bit that sits on the rim - and shock horror, you could wash your hands after as well

I pour bleach over the brush when it's in its little pot so the 'soup' (made me laugh) is mostly cleaning product. This obviously gets cleaned when I clean the toilet

I’m really shocked that anyone would use a loo brush but not clean the rest of the toilet.

Seems common among a few of my friends. If there are skids left the brush comes out (and then gets thrown). They consider that to be "cleaning" the toilet.

What really strikes me as odd is that the same friend's houses are generally tidy and the least cluttered. Also, none of them do any more than wipe the sink with a used towel and never clean the bath as they consider it clean anyway. Don't get me started on their dishcloths. That's another item that is considered clean because it's dipped in washing up water a few times a day.

I guess looking tidy and being clean really are two different animals.

@agentnully a woman I work with said she buys them 20 at a time at IKEA and throws them away every week. However she also constantly went on about being allergic to chocolate until I caught her in the kitchen scoffing quality street last December so she’s probably lying. Let’s hope so.

I do this. Stops the holder getting wet.

I also clean the handle/seat/rim first.

I've NEVER used a brush in a toilet that's not clear first. I flush to make sure there's no crap/paper in there first, bleach all the inside, and leave it sit for 20 minutes then scrub with the brush. Quick flush with the brush under the clean water then leave like that to dry.

My friend throws dozens of brushes into landfill because she uses them to try to push paper and shit that hasn't gone down first flush. I really can't understand why she doesn't flush (multiple times if necessary) first rather than do this. I'd rather waste a few flushes of water than keep putting brushes in the bin.

Alternatively, get a silicone brush with a ventilated holder that allows any water to vapour away and keeps the base clean.

You could instead put some dry toilet paper in the toilet and dab the toilet brush onto it so that it doesn’t drip on its way back to the holder.

And then your brush will be full of small bits of congealed bog roll like a tissue thats been through the wash.

And I generally wash my hands after I've been to the loo

I do this too. I clean the whole toilet including the seat and rim before I put the loo brush under the seat to dry. I also wipe the loo brush handle with antibac spray. It really works. I use a silicon loo brush so don't end up with rust marks around the bristles with added advantage that brush can be soaked in disinfectant.
