Has anyone got a dehumidifier

Sorry not a AIBU but just posting for traffic really! I have ordered a 20L dehumidifier for my house as it has bad condensation issue and has a musky smell too. Just wondering does the dehumidifier work for the whole house or only in each individual rooms? Where would you ideally put it for it to work for the entire house? I hope it does work as it cost me nearly £300!

Another very happy Meaco user here; my place has 4 bedrooms, but as it's just a bungalow the machine's more than adequate for the whole house

Yes they're brilliant. Ours is on our upstairs landing to capture the condensation from bedrooms overnight plus bathroom (we all shower before bed) it's also dragged next to the washing drier - one of those heated lakeland jobbies - its fantastic.

This is like when you look on Amazon for something and get bombarded with ads for it on Facebook for weeks! I was looking at dehumidifiers yesterday as DS has black mould growing in the corner of his wall/ceiling and starting to creep along the edge of the ceiling now too. I've noticed the last few days his bedding feels cold and damp where it's been in contact with the outside wall too.

I'm fairly skint right now so was looking more at the portable 1l ones that will work on a room the size of his, rather than one for the whole house. Has anyone got any experience using a little one? Are they any good, or am I better shelving the idea until I can afford a bigger one?

I ordered one yesterday £260 and highly rated on which. Hoping it sorts my house out.
Humidity in my house is about 70% and some things are getting mouldy, have mould spots on walls etc.
4 bedrooms, 3 reception rooms, 2 baths. It's 20l too and I've no idea if it will do the whole house but I don't mind moving it occasionally.
I was thinking the hall is probably the best place to put it with all internal doors open.
Tomorrow afternoon or on the second I'll wipe mould spots off walls then my cleaner comes on the 3rd so hoping house will be nice and fresh after that.

Keep reading the manual, it may have other settings you haven't figured out yet... we certainly found that we use ours differently now.

We exchanged our cheaper one for a more expensive version because if noise issues, size of tank, etc. The Meaco we now have has been great.

It sits in the bathroom when we have a shower... Listed building no extractor etc. It sits on the landing over night, goes into one bedroom during the day.

Washing dries really quickly.

When steam ironing it keeps the windows clear.

When cleaning carpets it speeds up the drying time.

Wouldn't be without it now.

I used to have a £200 dehumidifier when I was younger living in a basement flat with a friend, my room was damp and it made a huge different. It will on work in that room but I loved it

We have one in our dining room as it doesn't have an opening window but does have huge radiator and space to dry washing. It started getting damp so we got it and it really does help washing dry and keep the room dry. We only have a small one to move from room to room as needed. Our house is old and suffering from various damp and condensation problems.

£300 seems a lot, can you return it and get two for the same total price? Also if it does not have a built in hygrometer then buy one from ebay for about £5, will tell you the humidity percentage. Should be around 55% or lower. I think one only works for the whole house if it can be in a central position, all doors open etc. We have 3 now (old house, 2 stories, long and narrow) - one in the utility to dry laundry, one in the study/sitting room part, and one for the main bathroom upstairs - we chose this rather than an extractor fan. They're great!

You need you need to leave it on 24 hours including overnight and like a PP said it should run continuously for 2-3 days the first time you put it on. If yours cost £300 it should have a sensor on it to turn itself off if the air is dry enough. If you are in the UK it should actually make your sore throat, coughs, colds etc better as the air stops being so damp.

Also as PPs said try and rectify what is causing the majority of the condensation if possible, or at least bring the cause to the attention of the people who own the building if you don't. Otherwise it will run almost continuously after the first 3 days.

We have one. It dehumidifies the whole of upstairs (4 bed house) in a couple of hours. We are now looking at replacing the crap windows upstairs as we've saved enough. But in the interim it has been a good solution. We have 3 severe asthmatics in our family, lots of hospital admissions so anything that reduces damp and mould is important.

They are brilliant, we have one running every night, makes a huge difference, we brought ours based on the number of bedrooms in our house. Saves wiping down windows in the mornings. Drying of washing when you can’t hang it outside at this time of year, Well worth the money, ours is full every morning.

I don't know sorry! Ours was always kept comfortably high by my upstairs neighbour's leaky washing machine. Myabe your sore throat is being caused by the death throes of all that mould?

Ours says it should be 55%, but we have never got it so dry... Ours also wouldn't work over night as it needs to be a certain temperature otherwise it goes into defrost mode, which is still running, but I don't think it's dehumidifying.

I have an eco air and wouldn’t be without it. Dries winter washing so well. Used to dry clothes on radiator and had mould and musty smells but no more.

@toomuchtooold it really is! The musty smell has gone! I'm so happy. I am waiting til it completely dries out then start cleaning and painting over the awful mould spots lurking in the corners. This is probably in my head but I've noticed my throat is a bit dry.. it feels very dry in the house already. The humidity is set at 55%. Is this too low or should I increase it? I read on the booklet that 50-55% is a comfortable level for domestic household.

When you get one for the first time it usually fills really quickly for about the first 2 or 3 days and then slows down. It's so satisfying!

Thank you everyone. I am currently using it. I don't have it on overnight as I am worried it'll dry the air too much and give me a banging headache! Not something I want to wake up to. I've currently kept it in the hallway. It is already extracting water (fingers crossed)!

There's different humidity settings for winter and summer - ours is set between 45-55 from memory. It did overtime in the first few weeks, still fills up fairly quickly now. Think it's been running for four years now. Don't keep it running when you have windows open or you're just dehumidifying the world.
