I’d go back to the 90s or 89s!

Most damage was already done by 2009 :)

Actually I’d go back to the 80s. And stay there forever:)

No teenage goths or emos! Or far fewer, anyway
A lot less smoking
People are heavier, and concurrently the rise in "body positivity" etc
Streaming all the time
Being online 24/7
Rise in the popularity of flat faced dogs
Increased awareness of climate change
Increases awareness of abuse eg #metoo and the Yewtree stuff
Politics in the West becoming more rightwing
"Generation Rent"
Mental health a bit less stigmatised where some conditions are concerned
Much more awareness of autism

I was happy in 2009. Both sets of parents still alive, job was great, had a little bit more money than ever before.and thought I was rich. HA! I DID though still have a Nokia brick. Dh had a Nokia smart phone and he used a stylus. It was shit and i couldn't see the point. 2019, smart phones still amaze me (I couldn't be without mine), both sets of parents are no longer with us, money is fine but it doesn't bring our parents back. We've both got depression and anxiety but we are getting help and can see light at the end of the tunnel but id go back to 2009 in a heartbeat.

In 2009, we used LoveFilm and had to order DVDS which were sent out to us to watch and then post back! It got taken over by Amazon Prime and became the on demand service.

@caravanette

CRT = Cathode Ray Television. The sort most people over 40 grew up with. Smile Before flat screen/OLED 50 inch screen monster. Grin

This is a brilliant thread. Thank you. Smile

Ooooh, and I have to say I hate the phrase 'dropped' for a new single.

EG: .............. Ariana Grande's new single 'DROPS' on 7th December.

ARGH! No, her new single is released!

How have things changed since 2009?

Reading this has made me think so much... I have to say I was fairly naïve in 2009 and I thought my DC, who turned 4 & 2 that year, were going to be like the teenagers then were. They're nothing like that, the youngest describes herself as "VSCO", they're always quoting things they call vines, and don't even start on the hand gestures! Remember when putting 2 fingers up was seen as offensive? That's how my eldest greets her friends and her sister now.

When did people start contouring their faces? Some teens were talking about this on the train earlier and about laminating their eyebrows, which sounds very strange to me.
I don't know when the massive painted on eyebrows started and have no idea how to laminate them... or why Grin
This may be as much about me getting older as times changing...

People saying 'Can I get......' When asking for something in Greggs,or a coffee shop. Never heard this expression until about 6 or 7 years ago,it was always 'Can I have......' Whenever I hear someone say this,I always think to myself that the assistant should say, 'No,you can't get,I will get it,and you can have it'.

'reaching out' . No one ever contacts another person anymore.

'Gift' as a verb. You don't give people anything anymore, you gift them or you were gifted something.

Weddings, just be honest and charge admission and bypass the rigmarole with 'We have lived together/have kids so buy us a honeymoon/house' roundabout ways to get guests to pay for the event.

Smart phones are the big one for me. thinking ten years ago I didn't have one, yet I can't remember what it was like to not have one now. Bit like kids really Grin

A lot of sobering things have changed but one for me speech wise is triggered.

Everyone is triggered. If they are slightly irked they are triggered.

Teenagers actually try to wind each other up to ' trigger ' each other.

On a less serious note, in 2009, I still took pictures on my camera. My current phone has double the pixels of that camera!

People living their best life when they're doing something fun (and presumably living their shite life the rest of the time)

Uber

Every restaurant doing some form of delivery (eg through deliveroo), even McDonalds

Instagram influencer or vlogger being an actual job title

The high street has changed so much in the last 10 years loads of shops gone and looks set to continue

The rise in street food and little independent cafes etc while some of the big chains slowly die

Environmental issues used to be seen as for extremists or students etc now finally using less plastic etc is pretty mainstream

Being 'woke'

Netflix, now everyone binges on series instead of watching films
