What are the chances we will get our money back!? (Cancelled holiday)

Sorry posting for traffic!

We had a holiday booked for centre parcs next week, we got insurance when we booked as we had a newborn but sadly my nan has passed away and thats the reason we need to cancel...

The only problem I have is I have put in a claim with the travel insurance but it takes 8-10 days to find out whether you get your money back or not! Thats fine but if we aren't going to get our money back we will use the holiday... obviously by the time we get an answer the holiday will have been and gone!

So from people with experience what are the chances we will get our money back?!

Check the details on your policy , it’s impossible for us to say as we didn’t write them

@PurpleFlower1983 If I knew we wasn't going to get the money back id rather give it to friends or family so at least the holiday and money don't go to waste x

If it says Grandparents are included then I would imagine you will get it back. Alternatively could you sell it to someone else? Isn’t Winter Wonderland always full at Centerparcs? X

She died very suddenly we only celebrated her birthday on the Tuesday, she was fine very happy and healthy. Saw the doctor who diagnosed chest infection and gave antibiotics and passed away the next day! I don't want to go on the holiday... we go same week every year but I am to exhausted to go iv had to sort everything with myDM who I also care for full time.. but it is also a lot of money to just throw away if we don't get it back

It say grandparents are included for death...

I think it's a question that can only be answered by reading the small print of your policy.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss.
The main issue is likely to be her health at the time you took out the insurance ie was her passing from an existing illness / condition or was it from something unforseen.

It will depend on if she was already ill asks also it will depend on her age.
My dad was on holiday and my nan, his mum, took ill. We got him home. He lost a few days. He could only claim a small amount as she was in her 90s.

I have to say it's unlikely but I'd read the policy and see if bereavement cover is in there and who that covers, if it doesn't mention it you're not covered. I'm sorry and I'm sorry about your loss.

Apparently there should be a definition segment in your policy document which will say what a close relative is and grandparents are covered in mine.

Speak to the insurers. Ask them what they consider a close relative and go from there.

It will say in the policy who you get bereavement cover for. The policy will normally say something like you get cover for “close relatives” and then in the definitions section of the policy it will say who “close relatives” are.

I think people are being a bit unkind here. It sounds as if OP would much prefer to go to the funeral and reschedule the holiday for another time, but is loathe to lose the money if it won't be refunded. That seems perfectly understandable to me.

Either you are too upset to go /clashes with funeral or not?

So if you wouldn't get a refund then you would go anyway? Well then you are obviously able and willing to go so why would you NOT go? People don't go because they are heartbroken and grieving and unable to even contemplate a holiday or because of the timings of funerals etc. If you would fully intend to go if you don't get a refund then neither of these apply. Weird.

So it isn't that it clashes with her funeral?

PotteringAlong · 04/12/2019 19:01

If you can just go anyway then why are you not going?

rookiemere · 04/12/2019 19:01

Sorry for your loss. I googled to see what close relative is defined to be on google and grandparents are included according to law insider.

Many policies don't regard relatives close relatives.... Sadly... But do check... Cant they tell you over the phone?

But seriously? If you can go, why don't you?

I would go anyway, is there anything useful you can do if you stay at home?

Why not just go of you would use it anyway?

The cover the death of "close relatives" so you need to get in writing if your grandmother is considered a close relative.
